Career Day a Hit!
On Friday, March 4th, Westland's 8th graders got a first hand look at a variety of different career options. Parents and community members came in and spoke to students about their careers - we had real estate agents, Italian ice vendors, engineers, lawyers, international trade experts, journalists, and so many more. It was a fascinating morning! Kudos to Westland's counseling staff for organizing and implementing it and many thanks to all who gave so generously of your time and expertise. |

I'm going to keep my note short because there's lot of news this week. Just a quick reminder that, because the Staff vs. Student Basketball game was such a financial success, we cancelled Bingo Nite. So NO Bingo Nite on March 11th.
And not to be a nudge, but I happened to be browsing through the Giant A+ site this afternoon and couldn't help but notice that Pyle has raised $6,293.88 to date, whereas Westland has raised $3,085.11. More importantly, 304 Pyle families have registered their Giant cards and only 195 Westland families have done so. Come on folks - this is easy money!!! Don't let it pass us by - see below for instructions on how to register your card today.

If you haven't already done so, don't forget to fill out the Parent Survey regarding Westland's after school programming. Just click here to register your opinions. It will only take a few minutes, and we really need your input. The students all filled out their surveys in a STAR class several weeks ago, and results are being tabulated. |

Westland Students Make a Difference!
Fifteen Westland students headed to A Wider Circle last Friday for a morning of community service. The students were selected based on essays they submitted and teacher recommendations. It was a great success and a nice way to kick of Westland's on-going partnership with A Wider Circle.
Pam Holland has agreed to spearhead this effort for the remainder of this spring and next year. She has an enthusiastic committee already - look for an exciting array of volunteer opportunities. If you have suggestions or would like to get involved, please contact Pam. |

Young Chefs Cook Up More Than Great Food !
There are so many cool Westland initiatives that sometimes a few slip by unheralded, and a perfect example is the Blue Ocean Young Chefs Program spearheaded by Westland parent and professional chef Susan Fallon.
Working with Westland's counseling department, Susan developed a a program that provides its participants not only cooking skills, but also an entree (so to speak!) into the Westland community. The Young Chefs dress the part, outfitted in white jackets and long aprons and have learned basic skills such as kitchen sanitation and knife skills, how to read a recipe, watch it demonstrated and then create it themselves.
Together with assistant chefs, Amy Axthelm and her daughter Alyssa (B-CC 10th grader), the class has cooked up chicken dishes, tomato sauces, quesadillas, real Italian pizzas with homemade pizza dough, french toast with maple syrup and fresh berries, and of course, chocolate chip cookies.
It's all made possible with the generous assistance of Trader Joe's - Bethesda, which provides all of the class groceries, free of charge. The class will be touring Trader Joe's this week, and the staff there is excited to meet them!
Most importantly, the class has given its Young Chefs a sense of confidence and achievement that they can then carry back into the classroom. It's a perfect example of the kind of parent/teacher/student/community partnership that makes Westland such a vibrant community. |
