Last week was another eventful week at Westland - as usual! Many thanks to all who turned out for our first ever Study Skills Night last Wednesday. There's always a risk in trying something new, but in this case at least, the rewards were great!

I am very pleased to report the results of Westland's Kids Helping Kids Food Drive. I delivered over 350 pounds of canned food to the Manna Food Bank last Friday - they were delighted to receive our donation, and expressed thanks to the entire Westland community!

The Board of Education issued its decision on Thursday, Nov. 18th regarding capacity issues in the B-CC cluster. The Board directed the creation of a site selection committee in 2011 to identify a location for a new middle school in the B-CC area. The first meeting of that committee has been scheduled for Dec. 14th and I have been asked to serve on the committee as Westland's representative. Once a site has been identified, a feasibility study will take place (probably in early spring 2011) to determine the cost and scope of the new middle school. The Board also directed the superintendent to keep 6th graders at NCCES and CCES for the 2011-12 school year, and to study options for enhancing the middle school programs for those students until they can be reassigned to a middle school, including the cost and implications of reassigning these students to Westland. Finally, the Board adopted an elementary boundary study in the B-CC cluster to review assignments of Bethesda, Chevy Chase, North Chevy Chase and Rosemary Hills elementary schools, and to address the partial pairing of Bethesda and Rosemary Hills elementary schools.

We have assembled considerable background information regarding this issue on the PTA webpage - Planning for Growth and I encourage you to read it. All of these decisions do have significant implications for Westland as we move forward.

Please be sure to check the Westland website for up-to-date information about upcoming events!

Study Skills Nite Gets an "A"!

Almost 200 parents and kids attended Westland's first ever Study Skills Night on Wednesday Nov. 17th. What a great turnout!

The evening was joint effort between Westland and the PTA, with the PTA underwriting most of the expenses and Westland teachers & staff providing the substantive expertise. In this regard, I would especially like to thank the workshop facilitators - Steve Katz (math), Michelle Lawthers & Deb Menke (English/writing), Alison Lepard (organizational skills), Cindy Villavicencio & Themis Johnson (ed-line), and JoAnna Ringelstetter (foreign language). Many thanks also to Westland administrators Danny Vogelman, Ben Costa, Shelia Harrison, Dave Obstgarten, and counselor Melanie Khani for their help in making the evening a success. And finally, thanks to PTA volunteers Laurie Rosen & Meredith Valmon for ordering and serving lots of pizza to hungry participants!

If you weren't able to make it, never fear! All of the presentation materials are (or shortly will be) available on Westland's website. Click here or just go to the main Westland page and click on the Study Skills link on the left side of the page.

Parent Information Meetings at CCES & BE

Westland administrators and counselors will facilitate parent information meetings this fall at various cluster elementary schools. The meetings are geared toward 5th and 6th grade parents who intend for their children to attend Westland.  The Westland staff will present general school information and help parents navigate the registration and course selection processes.

There will be three meetings within the Westland community.  Parents may choose any of the three meetings to attend.  All meetings begin at 7:00 PM.  The places and dates of the remaining meetings are:

November 29 - Chevy Chase Elementary (primarily for 6th grade parents)

November 30 - Note Date Change! Bethesda Elementary (primarily for 5th grade parents)
