First and foremost, congratulations to Principal Danny Vogelman and his wife Sandy on the arrival of their twin boys! Jace & Trey were born on Tuesday, Nov. 9th. They came home to join big brother Ethan this past weekend.
On Wednesday, we'll have our first ever Study Skills Nite! Please plan to attend with your child. This will be a fantastic opportunity for both of you to learn effective techniques to cut down on study time and increase study efficiency. The teachers have been hard at work on their presentations, and we are hoping for a big turnout. Come early (at 6:30) for a slice of pizza; the skills sessions will start promptly at 7:00pm.
Many thanks to all who turned out for last Wednesday's screening of Race to Nowhere - over 650 parents & teachers watched this thought-provoking film.
We probably would have had an even bigger turnout if the Board of Education meeting hadn't been the same evening! Many Westland parents attended the session, which focused largely on alternatives for addressing capacity issues in the B-CC Cluster. As the only middle school serving the cluster at present, Westland will have to come up with some creative options to ensure that it can continue to serve the needs of an ever-increasing student body. We have assembled quite a bit of background information regarding this issue on the PTA webpage - Planning for Growth. I hope you will take time to read it and consider the options. The Board of Education is expected to announce its decision regarding its preferred approach to the capacity issues on Thursday, Nov. 18th. Please be sure to check the Westland website for up-to-date information about upcoming events! - Alysa Emden

Decrease Homework Time; Increase Efficiency!
Please plan to attend Westland's first ever Study Skills Nite on Wednesday, Nov. 17th from 6:30-9:00pm, a joint undertaking by the Westland PTA and the school's administration and staff.
Created in response to popular demand, this event is an opportunity for both parents and students to get tips from the experts about how to make the most of study time. Parents are encouraged to bring your student(s) and select workshops together; the presentations will focus not only on how students can study effectively, but also on how parents can best support those efforts.
Come at 6:30pm for a slice of pizza and a drink, courtesy of the PTA. The program begins at 7:00pm with opening remarks by Acting Principal Ben Costa. Then, you'll choose one among five 45-minute seminars taught by Westland teachers and staff. After a brief 15-minute break, you'll attend a second seminar of your choice.
Topics include Fundamentals of Studying, How to Use Ed-Line Effectively, How to Sudy for Math, How to Study for Foreign Languages, and The ABC's of Studying for English.
The PTA and school are excited to be able to offer this program, and we hope for lots of parent/student participation! |
