Happy Halloween! It's hard to believe that another month has sped by. Somehow it seems fitting to have a couple of days off next week to catch our collective breath and gear up for November and December. Things start back at full tilt on Wednesday, Nov. 3, as the PTA sponsors a visit by Cristina Kessler, an award winning author. Ms Kessler will be at Westland to meet with the seventh grade english classes throughout the day as part of Westland's commitment to the IB Middle Years Program. Ms. Kessler, who resides in the Virgin Islands, is in Washington, DC to receive an award for her latest book, Trouble in Timbuktu. The Children's Africana Book Awards Committee has named Trouble in Timbuktu a 2010 Honor Book for Older Readers. You can find more information about Ms. Kessler and the award ceremony at her website. Many thanks to Sarah Farnsworth for arranging this wonderful opportunity.
The following week, the PTA co-sponsors a screening of Race to Nowhere (see article below) on Nov. 10th. Not only are we excited about bringing this important film to a Westland audience, but also we are delighted to collaborate with the B-CC PTSA in the effort.
And then the next week is the occasion of the advent of a new program - Study Skills Nite on Nov. 17th! Created in response to parent requests, the program is pattered after a similar event at nearby Pyle MS. That extremely popular event draws huge numbers of parents and students, and we hope that this will be the first of many equally successful programs at Westland.
And those are just some of the highlights of what's coming up - there's plenty more! Please be sure to check the Westland website for up-to-date information.

Final Week to Order Magazines!
If you've been thinking about it, now's the time to act. Renew your magazine subscriptions, order magazines as holiday gifts for friends and family, help fill teacher wish lists for classroom resources. And it's all incredibly easy!
Just log on to www.qsp.com. If you are a new user, click on "Register Now" and follow the instructions. If you ordered on-line last year, click on "Log into Your Account" and update your child's grade & STAR teacher info. Westland's ID is 425003290. Westland receives 40% of all purchases and we use those funds to support a variety of programs, including cultural arts, enrichment activities, scholarship support, and staff projects. As an added bonus, the prices are very reasonable - way better than newsstand. If you have any questions or would like to see the teacher wish lists, please contact sale chairperson Amy Nadel at amynadel@verizon.net. |

New This Year - Study Skills Nite!
Mark your calendar for Westland's first ever Study Skills Nite on Wednesday, Nov. 17th from 6:30-9:00pm, a joint undertaking by the Westland PTA and the school's administration and staff.
Created in response to popular demand, this event is an opportunity for both parents and students to get tips from the experts about how to make the most of study time. Parents are encouraged to bring your student(s) and select workshops together; the presentations will focus not only on how students can study effectively, but also on how parents can best support those efforts.
Come at 6:30pm for a slice of pizza and a drink, courtesy of the PTA. The program begins at 7:00pm with opening remarks by Principal Danny Vogelman. Then, you'll choose one among five 45-minute seminars taught by Westland teachers and staff. After a brief 15-minute break, you'll attend a second seminar of your choice.
Topics include Fundamentals of Studying, How to Use Ed-Line Effectively, How to Sudy for Math, How to Study for Foreign Languages, and The ABC's of Studying for English.
The PTA and school are excited to be able to offer this program, and we hope for lots of parent/student participation! |
