Dodgeball is FUN!!!
Westland's first annual Dodgeball Tournament is coming up...we just need participants! The tournament, on Friday, Nov. 5th, is the culminating event in Westland's Kids Helping Kids Food Drive to benefit Manna Food Center. The entry "fee" is 5 cans of food per team member. BIG CHANGE JUST IN - no need to set up a whole team - just show up with your cans of food and your parental permission form on Friday, Nov.5th and we'll put teams together. Many thanks to all who came to the grade parent coffees over the past few weeks. They culminated in the 6th grade coffee last Monday. They afforded a great opportunity to meet other parents, and to chat informally with Westland administrators. The general consensus seems to be that more events along these lines are in order, and the PTA reps are working on it. As predicted, the hot topic at last Wednesday's B-CC Cluster was Superintendent Weast's recommendations regarding the creation of a new middle school. In case you missed it, you can click here to read the full text of his report. Mostly just discussion at this point, but stay tuned as the process moves through the Board of Education.
Did you register your Giant and Safeway cards last week??? No? Well, 7 of your friends did. So now we're up to 118 total - out of a school of 950+ families. That's 12% participation. Thank you to the 12% who've taken a few seconds and are helping to raise money for Westland every time you shop. I ask - okay, I'm begging - the other 88% of you to sign up this week! Please take this one small step that has such a great impact. See below for how to sign up - honestly, it couldn't be easier and if you have any questions, Toni Baldwin is standing by ready to help. Student Directories were handed out last week. Many thanks to those parents who braved the lunch time chaos to help distribute them. There's one directory per child. If you haven't received yours yet, it means that your child hasn't picked it up yet. I will sort them by STAR class tomorrow and they will be handed to your child in STAR on Tuesday. If you still don't receive it, then I have to guess it's buried in locker somewhere! If you'd like a second Directory (or third or fourth!), they're available for purchase for $5 each in the front office. Renewed Your Magazines Yet?
The PTA's annual magazine sale is in full swing so please review the packet your child brought home. Or better yet, skip the packet (which you may or may not have received!) and go straight the the internet.
 Just log on to www.qsp.com. If you are a new user, click on "Register Now" and follow the instructions. If you ordered on-line last year, click on "Log into Your Account" and update your child's grade & STAR teacher info. Westland's ID is 425003290. Westland receives 40% of all purchases and we use those funds to support a variety of programs, including cultural arts, enrichment activities, scholarship support, and staff projects. 2nd Annual Second TIme 'Round Sale
The Second Time 'Round Sale took place on Saturday, Oct. 23rd. The Westland cafeteria was filled to the brim with great clothing treasures, and many shoppers showed up even before the 8:00am start time to take advantage of the great bargains.
At the end of the day, the PTA netted approximately $1,250, many closets are clean, many shoppers are happy, and all the leftover clothes were donated to a charity to be put to good use - not bad for a day's work!
Actually, more like a day and a half - and long ones at that! Many thanks to all the volunteers who made it happen. On Friday afternoon, Paola Bolzan, Jessica Chapman, Alysa Emden, Maia Emden, Lisa Hartigan, Jane Cohen Hartman, Tiffany Leeson, Michelle, McNally, Maureen McRaith, Reiko Niimi, Laurie Rosen, Holly Searl, Eileen Sherman, Alex Weiner, and Judy Wolf got everything out of the bags, onto the tables, hung up, and generally looking great! On Saturday, Alysa Emden, Jane Cohen Hartman, Amy Booker-Hirsch, Maureen McRaith, Amy Nadel, Reiko Niimi, Marietta Shimizu-Larenas, Liz Parr, Heather Rosenketter, Mafida Siddique, Teddy Springer, Eric Sterling, Maya Sterling, Alex Weiner and Judy Wolf kept the sales going and the sales floor looking great! Others helped as well, and although I don't have all your names, you certainly have the community's appreciation! |
