The B-CC Cluster made the headlines this week with the issuance of Superintendant Weast's recommendations regarding the creation of a new middle school. Please click here to read the full text of his report. From Westland's standpoint, there are both short-term and long-term ramnifications of this recommendation, which is not anticipated to materialize until 2015 at the earliest.  Your PTA respresentatives and Principal Danny Vogelman will be attending a B-CC Cluster Summit on Wednesday at which this will, no doubt, be a hot topic of discussion. We will, as always, keep the Westland community informed of developments.

Thanks are in order for a terrific Columbus Day Open House. Approximately 400 parents came and visited their children's classes. Many thanks to Sarah Farnsworth and her team of outstanding volunteers for providing food & drink, directions, and staffing the PTA table.

Many of you stop me and say you wish you could do more at Westland. I have the perfect solution for you. Register your Giant and Safeway cards!!!!! By doing this one simple thing, you help raise money for Westland every time you shop. As of Sunday evening, 111 people had registered their Giant cards. I thank every one of you, but you are only 1/10 of the entire Westland population. What about the other 900+ families??? Surely some of you shop at Giant or Safeway and can take this one small step that has such a great impact. Please see below for how to sign up - honestly, it couldn't be easier.

This is an exciting week for me personally as we are handing out the Westland Student Directories at lunch today. I  feel that the Directory is one of the most important (and useful!) things the PTA does, but I cannot tell you how many hours I put into getting it produced. Just a reminder, I'm not going to be here next year, so if you have any directory expertise and/or interest, please let me know so I can pass along all my trade secrets!

And I will close with a plea to all to come to the Second Time 'Round Sale on Saturday! It's going to be bigger and better than ever, so don't miss it!

  PTA President
Magazine Sale Is Off and Running!
The PTA's annual magazine sale began last Wednesday so look for the packet your child brought home. Or better yet, skip the packet (which you may or may not have received!) and go straight the the internet.

Stack of MagazinesJust log on to www.qsp.com. If you are a new user, click on "Register Now" and follow the instructions. If you ordered on-line last year, click on "Log into Your Account" and update your child's grade & STAR teacher info. Westland's ID is 425003290.

Westland receives 40% of all purchases and we use those funds to support a variety of programs, including cultural arts, enrichment activities, scholarship support, and staff projects. As an added bonus, the prices are very reasonable - way better than newsstand.

Tthis year's magazine sale chairperson is Amy Nadel. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Amy at amy.nadel@verizon.net.
6th Grade Parent Coffee THIS Morning
Coffee Cups
Stop reading right now and get going! The PTA grade vice presidents have organized a series of coffees at which you'll  have a chance to meet each other, chat with Principal Danny Vogelman and your grade administrator, and generally start your day out right. All coffees will take place from 8:30-10:30am at La Madeleine in downtown Bethesda. The 7th grade coffee took place Oct. 7th, and the 8th grade coffee on Oct. 13th. Last, but certainly not least,  the 6th grade coffee is TODAY, Monday, Oct. 18th. Any questions, please contact 6th grade VPs Karen Lippold and Shelagh Meehan; 7th grade VPs Susan Teplitz and Laurie Rosen; or 8th grade VPs Ari Antonelli and Pooh Shapiro. Hope to see you there!
Westland & RCF Team Up for a Great Fiesta!
FlagsOctober is Hispanic Heritage month, and one of the many ways Westland and Rock Creek Forest ES celebrated was by throwing a party on Thurs. Oct. 14th at RCF. If you missed it, you missed a very fun celebration, and some seriously good food!

Westland families joined with RCF families to enjoy a fabulous potluck dinner, skits by Westland and RCT students, to test their knowledge on quizzes, etc. Westland's assistant school administrator Shelia Harrison coordinated the event, with help from Westland & RCF parents. Principal Danny Vogelmand & Assistant Principal Ben Costa joined in the festivities, as did Westland teachers Cindy Villavicencio & Jennifer Lindes, and PTA President Alysa Emden. Muchas, muchas gracias to all for a wonderful evening!
2nd Annual Second TIme 'Round Sale
There's so much cool stuff already, I don't even know where to start. Does your teenager need a new dress or suit to wear to the next bar or bat mitzvah? Do they need new cleats? New jeans? Anyone in need of a riding jacket and shirt? Perhaps a new sweater, or new pair of heels?

Youll find all this and more at Westland's second annual Second Time 'Round Sale THIS Saturday (10/23) from 8:00-4:00pm at Westland!

Still procrastinating about cleaning those closets??  Delay no more! Sort it out, put it in bags, and donate everything to Westland's Second Time 'Round Sale. We're looking for donations of adult & children's clothing, shoes, sports equipment, and costume jewelry. No books or furniture please - we just can't store it!

Drop off your stuff anytime this week through Friday morning at Westland's front office. The sale will take place on Saturday, Oct. 23rd from 8:00am-4:00pm, so mark your calendars now and plan to come shop for treasures to restock your newly empty closets! Questions, or to volunteer, please contact Alysa Emden.
