Dodgeball is FUN!!!
Dodgeball is Good
Westland's first annual Dodgeball Tournament is coming up...we just need participants! The tournament, on Friday, Nov. 5th,  is the culminating event in Westland's Kids Helping Kids Food Drive to benefit Manna Food Center. The entry "fee" is 5 cans of food per team member. Kids are excited, but they might need a little parental help to get teams together, forms signed, and cans collected. Please click here for more information and registration forms.

As all of you who have kids who play competitive sports know, winning is good (although, of course, not everything), but winning also means more games, and, in the case of soccer, more games means more time at the SoccerPlex! Which is pretty much where I spent my weekend, and which is where I'll be this morning. I'm sorry to have to miss the start of the Columbus Day Open House, but Sarah Farnsworth has done a great job organizing volunteers & food, so you'll be in good hands!

Please stop by for as long as you can - it's a great opportunity to visit your child's classes in a less chaotic atmosphere than back to school nite. And if you want to skip a class, you can always come hang out in the front hall and  enjoy coffee, homemade biscotti (courtesy of Carole Klein - grandmother of Eve & Beau Chesivoir and biscotti maker extraordinaire!), and a chance to chat with friends.

This is, as always, an action-packed week at Westland - albeit a short one! Please check the calendar at the left to make sure you don't miss anything.

PTA General Meeting Summary & Thanks!
Thanks to those who were able to attend last Wednesday's PTA general meeting, we now have a duly elected PTA Board and budget for the remainder of the year! I can't say it was a large crowd - maybe 40 - but we did run through an overview of upcoming events in the next couple of months. It's a packed
schedule, so please keep checking the Westland website for the latest news and updates.

Principal Danny Vogelman reviewed the State of the School, noting particularly the leadership team's focus on staff development this year. Westland students' MSA test scores continue to improve overall, and even more encouraging, the gap between our African American and Hispanic students' scores and our White and Asian students' scores continues to
narrow. Rachel Johns spoke about the goals and objectives of Westland's IB program, Jessica Nachman gave an overview of the Counseling Dept. and the resources it offers our students, and Ben Costa gave an overview of Westland's vibrant after school program.
Magazine Sale Kicks Off Wednesday!
The PTA's annual magazine sale begins Wednesday so look for the packet your child will be bringing home. Or better yet, skip the packet and go straight on-line!

Stack of MagazinesJust log on to www.qsp.com. If you are a new user, click on "Register Now" and follow the instructions. If you ordered on-line last year, click on "Log into Your Account" and update your child's grade & STAR teacher info. Westland's ID is 425003290.

Westland receives 40% of all purchases and we use those funds to support a variety of programs, including cultural arts, enrichment activities, scholarship support, and staff projects. As an added bonus, the prices are very reasonable - way better than newsstand.

Tthis year's magazine sale chairperson is Amy Nadel. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Amy at amy.nadel@verizon.net.
7th Grade Parent Coffee a Hit; 8th grade next!

Coffee Cups
The PTA grade vice presidents have organized a series of coffees at which you'll  have a chance to meet each other, chat with Principal Danny Vogelman and your grade administrator, and generally start your day out right. All coffees will take place from 8:30-10:30am at La Madeleine in downtown Bethesda. The 7th grade coffee took placeThursday, Oct. 7th - many thanks to all who stopped by, and especially to Principal Danny Vogelman and 7th grade administrator Shelia Harrison; the 8th grade coffee is Wednesday, Oct. 13th; and the 6th grade coffee is Monday, Oct. 18th. Any questions, please contact 6th grade VPs Karen Lippold and Shelagh Meehan; 7th grade VPs Susan Teplitz and Laurie Rosen; or 8th grade VPs Ari Antonelli and Pooh Shapiro. Hope to see you there!
Hispanic Heritage Celebration & Potluck Dinner!
FlagsOctober is Hispanic Heritage month, and one of the ways Westland is celebrating is by throwing a party! We're joining together with our feeder school, Rock Creek Forest ES, for a potluck dinner that will also
feature artwork and performances by Westland & RCFES students. The event is
scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 14 from 6:30-8:00pm at RCF. All Westland families are welcome - please bring a dish and plan to come!

If you can help with planning the event, please contact Westland administrator Shelia Harrison. She is coordinating the efforts of Westland staff and parents!  Muchas gracias!

2nd Annual Second TIme 'Round Sale
Been putting off that long-overdue closet cleaning because you just didn't know what to do with the stuff you don't need/doesn't fit/never wanted in the first place???  Delay no more!
