THANKS TO OUR WILDCAT SPONSORS!

Hope everyone had a restful and fun Spring Break! We're well into the final few months of the school year, and hold on, because the events are coming fast and furious. The Wild Dash kicks things off on April 25th, followed by the PTA-sponsored cultural arts programming  in early May as the Shakespeare Company exposes kids to the Bard on the stage and in the classroom. Then the 6th graders are headed to their Outdoor Ed. Followed by the Spring Play, Spring Concerts, Teacher Appreciation Week, the Book Fair, the 8th Grade Dance...and that's just the highlights!

It's an exciting time, not only for what's going on now, but also because it's time to start planning for next year as well. The PTA is THE place to get involved if you'd like to be part of all the action! I will be sending out job opportunities over Westland-net over the next couple of weeks and I hope you'll take a few moments to consider taking them on. Please don't assume someone else will do it - parental involvement is a huge part of what makes Westland so terrific and that means YOU!

In an effort to reach out to new parents, the PTA is also hosting a series of coffees and desserts for incoming parents from our feeder schools. I'm hosting a morning coffee for BE parents on April 23, and Ari Antonelli is hosting a dessert for Somerset parents on April 28th. If you'd like to host a get-together for your elementary school, please let me know!

As always, please contact me or Alex Weiner if you'd like to hear more about all of the opportunities that are available. The best jobs go early, so don't procrastinate!

Welcome Back!

Westland Musicians Rock!
NotesWestland's student musicians turned in some great performances at MCPS adjudications held the week before spring break! Band, orchestra, and chorus all received superior ratings - the best possible. Congratulations to all the kids, and to Ms. Garay, Mr. Barnes, and Ms. Serratore for their leadership and endless patience!  Also, many thanks to the parents who accompanied each of the groups as chaperones. Now THAT was an easy gig - great kids and great music!
Westland  Seedlings To Benefit Perry School!

Seedling in handsIn February, approximately 28 Westland students gathered after school to plant organic vegetable & flower seeds as part of a new community service project. Under the guidance of science teachers Alison Lepard and Stephanie Lee, the students have been tending the seedlings, and they have now grown into full-fledged plantlings!

You can read all about their project at the www.american.gov website - a website that delivers information about current U.S. foreign policy and about American life and culture that is produced by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of International Information Programs.  Just click here!

Now, it's time for the next step. The kids plan to sell the plants to raise funds to benefit the Perry School in Washington, DC, which runs an all-scholarship camp for kids in need. The sale will take place on Tuesday, April 21 from 5:00-7:00pm before the PTA Meeting - please plan to attend both the sale and the meeting!

Thanks to parents Lauren Rubenstein & Jenny Brown, and to Ms. Lepard and Ms. Lee for spearheading this great effort!
Thanks for Shopping!
Many thanks to all who participated in the recent special Westland shopping days at Modell's and American Plant Garden Center! We really value these community partners, and very much appreciate those who made the effort to remember to stop by.

Quite a few Westland gardens must look better, because we spent over $950 at American Plant on April 1! Thanks to your shopping and the generosity of American Plant, the Westland PTA has almost $100 more to spend on programming for our kids.

The totals aren't in yet for Modell's, but given the number of coupons I distributed, I think we'll do well! Thank you all.
3rd Annual Westland Wild Dash 5K!

Did Spring Break make you realize you REALLY need to get into shape for summer? We have the solution...

RunningRun in the 3rd annual Westland Wild Dash 5K on Saturday, April 25 at 8:30am! Race co-chairs Cynthia Walicki-Chan, Melissa Peppe, and Meredith Valmon have done a lot, but now they need YOUR help.

Register now to sign up online. Just click here.  Paper registration forms will be coming home in backpacks this week. !

Race day is an exciting time and we need volunteers to help with, among other things, packet pick up, monitoring intersections along the course, and helping with set up and clean up for the food and prize tables. Please contact Meredith Valmon if you can give the gift of time!

If your running skills are a bit rusty, you need to join the Westland Wild Dash Training Program! It meets every Tuesday and Thursday at 3:00pm outside the gym doors. No need to sign up in advance; just bring a water bottle and show up ready to run. You can come to as many sessions as you like. Parents are welcome! The program will continue every Tuesday and Thursday until race day.
