Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a good break and is refreshed and ready to start back into a new calendar year. Before we do, however, a few items from the end of last year..
Congratulations are in order to Ms. Garay and Ms. Serratore and all of the kids who participate in Westland's terrific music programs. The Instrumental and Choral Concerts were both outstanding! Many thanks to all who worked so hard to make those events - and their related bake sales - happen.
Thanks are also due to Hope Pinkerton and her cadre of generous parents who organized the Holiday Breakfast for teachers and staff on Friday, December 19th. It was an absolutely amazing spread, and the teachers and staff were so appreciative. Special thanks to Karen Lippold who baked and decorated 100 beautiful snowflake cookies as gifts for the teachers!
The first sign that it's a new year comes Wednesday when counselors from B-CC will come to Westland to introduce our 8th graders to some of their high school choices. To help YOU sort it all out, the January PTA Meeting will feature B-CC parent veterans who will give us the low-down on what high school life is really like. Mark your calendar - January 21st at 7:00pm at Westland.
And the second sign that it's a new year is that I'm asking for volunteers! We have reformatted International Night to focus more on what Westland families are doing out in the world. It should be a great evening - but we need your help to pull it off. Please help however you can.
And finally...just because the year ended doesn't mean it's too late to join the PTA! Our goal is 100% membership, so please
join the PTA today.

Celebrate Westland's International Outlook!
On Saturday, January 24th, the Westland community will have an opportunity to learn about what Westland familes are doing in the world!
The PTA and the International Club are sponsoring an International Fair which will feature exhibits by families and staff about the various international organizations and efforts they might be involved with - whether through work or volunteer efforts. For example, we hope to have tables featuring Peace Corps experiences, World Bank, IMF, various study abroad programs, charitable groups working abroad, etc. It will be a great opportunity to learn about each other...and to educate others about an effort you support!
But to do this, we need you! What in the world are you doing? Are you willing to share it with the Westland community? This doesn't involve a major time commitment, just a willingness to share your international professional or volunteer interests with other Westland families and students for a couple of hours one evening!
To sweeten the deal, the evening will also feature an potluck dinner with foods from around the world! Westland families represent a vast arrary of cultures and cuisines - you'll be transported by the wonderful smells and tastes.
The International Club is hard at work, but we need a couple of volunteers to spearhead the PTA's effort. At a minimum, we need someone to solicit and coordinate the family/staff exhibits and someone to coordinate the dinner. It should be a fun and informal evening - grab a couple of friends and just say "YES"! Please contact Alysa Emden to volunteer or for more information. | |

Save Those Grocery Receipts!
In this tough economic climate, our community partners are more important than ever. Westland raises money while you do what you would do anyway - shop for food! Our newest partnerships are with Snider's Supermarket and Chevy Chase Supermarket. Snider's is located at 1936 Seminary Road, Silver Spring, MD 20920 and Chevy Chase Supermarket is located at 8531 Connecticut Avenue, Chevy Chase, MD 20815.
Westland earns 1% of everything you spend! All you have to do is SAVE YOUR RECEIPTS. Then, send them into school in an envelope marked "PTA - Grocery Receipts" or mail then to Karen Safer at 3212 Pauline Drive, Chevy Chase, MD 20815. Questions? Contact PTA coordinators Karen Safer or Elysa Blacker. |
