The frost on the ground means winter's definitely here! And that means it's time for the Westland performing and musical arts departments to show off their stuff! Please don't miss the performances of Aladdin this week and the instrumental and choral concerts next week. It's always inspiring to see all that the kids have accomplished over the fall.
And speaking of inspiring, kudos to Special Education Department teachers Chris Thompson and Tracy Wenz for spearheading the homelessness learning initiative this month. STAR class presentations, banners, posters, field trips and a canned food drive - they've done a great job of educating our kids and families about the many facets of this problem. You can support their efforts as well by contributing to Westland's food drive - we have a goal of 140,000 pounds - that's a lot of food, but I'm sure the Westland community can do it!
And finally...you can still join the PTA - it's the perfect holiday gift to yourself & the school! Our goal is 100% membership, so please join the PTA today! |

Westland Food Drive Underway!
Westland's holiday food drive began last week with a presentation about homelessness in each STAR class. Throughout the month, Westland students will learn more about this issue, and how they can help address pressing needs for food and shelter. Kids are encouraged to bring in donations of non-perishable food to their STAR classes - our goal is 140,000 pounds of food! We'll also be collecting donations at the play performances and band & choral concerts, so you'll have plenty of opportunities to give, and give again! Thank you. | |

Aladdin!
Westland's ALADDIN tells the story of a bored king who commands his subjects to entertain him which they do by acting out a novel and over-the top version of the well known story. The play is full of hilarious gags, clever skits and laughs for the whole family.
Performances are on:
- Thursday, December 11 at 7:00 p.m.
- Friday, December 12 at 7:00 p.m.
- Saturday, December 13: 2:00 p.m.
Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students
Tickets go on sale during lunch on December 10, 11 and 12 during lunch for each grade. Tickets bought in advance will be eligible for a special preferred seating section! |

Winter Concerts!
The Westland Music Department will ring in the holiday season with two winter concerts - Band/Orchestra on December 17 and Chorus on December 18. You not only have the chance to attend these great events, but also the chance to help underwrite them by advertising in the concert programs! For information about advertising in the Band/Orchestra Concert program, contact Alysa Emden. For information about advertising in the Choral Concert program, please contact Cindy Stauffer. In addition, there will be bake sales prior to each concert. Donations & volunteers are needed for both! Please contact Rita Klein or Margo Gottesman to help with the instrumental concert and Cindy Stauffer to help with the choral concert. |

If you can help with breakfast treats, with set-up, or with assembling teacher gifts, please contact Hope Pinkerton, our teacher appreciation chairperson. |
