A belated Happy Thanksgiving to all! I hope everyone had a good holiday with family and friends - and that you're all recharged for a great December at Westland. There's certainly plenty on the agenda...

First off, the Westland SGA, the Special Education Department, and the PTA are co-sponsoring a food drive this month. The drive kicked off in STAR class this morning, with a presentation on homelessness and hunger. Throughout December, the kids will focus on different aspects of these difficult and all-too-common issues. You'll hear more about this effort, but please, to the extent possible, try to open your hearts and your pantries to help those in need in our community.

Many thanks to those who took the time to respond to our first-ever PTA poll. The question was "Do you support or oppose closing school on Inauguration Day (Jan. 20th)?" Of the 84 respondents, 60% opposed closing school, and 40% supported it. Our MCCPTA representatives will report those results at the upcoming Delegates Assembly.

As you can see on the Calendar at left, there is a lot going on in December. And, just to whet your appetite, listed below are some events that will take place early next year. These events are only possible with the enthusiastic support of our families. Please take a look, and volunteer your time where you can. Every event needs some helping hands. And that participation and commitment are what keep the Westland community thriving!

And finally...you can still join the PTA - we never close our books!  Our goal is 100% membership, so please
join the PTA today!
Westland Spirit Wear Arrives!

At long last, the Westland spirit wear order is in! If you have not paw printsalready done so, please make arrangements with Alysa Emden to pick up your goodies. They can be available for your child to pick up at the School Store on Wednesday or Friday, or you can pick them up at her house. Just let her know.

For those of you who didn't pre-order, there are a few t-shirts and hats available for sale at the School Store. T-shirts are $10, and hats are $15.
Staff Holiday Breakfast
To celebrate the holidays, and to let the staff know how much Holly Leavestheir efforts are appreciated, the PTA will host a holiday breakfast at Westland on Friday, December 19th at 7:15am. If you can help with breakfast treats, with set-up, or with assembling teacher gifts, please contact Hope Pinkerton, our teacher appreciation chairperson. This has been a lovely event in years past, and we need your help to make this year's even better!
Calling All Skiers!
Winter means snow, and snow means skiing! Once again, the Penguin SkiingWestland Teen Club will sponsor three ski trips - one to Wisp (Jan. 25-26), one to Greek Peak (Feb. 13-19) and one to Liberty (March 7). For more information about each trip, click here. The trips are run in conjunction with the Montgomery County Recreation Department. To register on-line, you must have an account with MCRD. For more information on opening an account, click here. If you have any questions, you can also e-mail Westland coordinator (and science teacher!) Jean Emery.
Looking Ahead...
2009 will soon be upon us and we just wanted to remind you to mark your calendars for some great upcoming PTA events:
And now that you've written them down, we need your help! All of these events take planning, and that needs to start now. If you can volunteer to help with any/all of these events, please contact the chair person/people listed. Please don't think that vast committees already exist - they don't!

THANKS TO OUR WILDCAT SPONSORS!
