Apologies for missing last week's edition of the Wildcat Wire. So many things were going on, I didn't even have time to write about them! So, to catch up...

Over 300 runners turned out for the Edgemoor Classic 5K on Sunday, Nov. 2 to benefit Bethesda Elementary and the Bethesda Library. Westland student Alix Emden took first place in the Middle School Girls division and Westland alum Alex Doll won first place in the Women's overall division! Many Westland students and families participated - you can check out the results and see pictures at www.edgemoorcitizens.org.

On the fundraising and just general fun front, Westland's inaugural Election Day Bake Sale on Tuesday, Nov. 4 was a terrific success! Similarly, the Magazine Sale, which concluded Sunday, Nov. 9 raised some much-needed funds for the PTA. See the articles below for more details.

The PTA doesn't just raise money - we spend it too! I'm delighted to announce that the first cultural arts program of the year will take place this week on Wednesday. Percussionist Hal Trapkin will present 3 shows (one per grade). See below for a description of his performance. Many thanks to Cultural Arts Chair Dee Carden for a fabulous job researching and booking this, as well as future cultural arts events for our kids.

And finally...we haven't reached our goal of 100% PTA membership yet, so if you haven't already done so, please
join the PTA today!
Westland Students Get Musical History Lesson!Percussion Set
How did Hip Hop evolve from Rock & Roll? Did you know that Ragtime is the grand-daddy of today's teen music? In assemblies on Wednesday, November 12, Westland students will get a musical history lesson, when percussionist Hal Trapkin presents HOTMINUS, or The History of Music in the United States. Hal's one-man show covers one hundred years of music:  Ragtime, Blues, Boogie Woogie, Jazz, Swing, Rock & Roll, Rock and today's popular music. The 45 minute show also delves into the critical role of radio and television, features a look at band wardrobe history and ends with a multi-media finale. Click here to find out more about Hal. Rock on!
Magazine Sale Concludes!Stack of Magazines

The Westland PTA's annual Magazine Sale ends today! We have to tally the final few orders,  but it looks like we raised about $4,400 for Westland.

Every child who sold a magazine will receive a prize. The prizes will be handed out in lunch in a couple of weeks.

Many thanks to all who participated, and especially to Sale Chair Susan Buchanan for a terrific job!
Westland Bake Sale Declared a Winner!
CupcakeWhether your candidate came out on top or not, one thing is clear - the PTA's inaugural Election Day bake sale was a winner! Many thanks to Gwenn Marley (and her daughter, Liberty D'Anton, 6th grade) for organizing this great event.

Thanks also to all of the parent and child volunteers who baked tons of delicious goodies, helped sell them throughout the day, and generally brightened the voting experience of thousands of voters. Their efforts also brightened the financial outlook of the PTA - we raised over $1,000! These funds will help underwrite the many programs sponsored by the PTA, including after school activities, cultural arts programs, and scholarships. It was a terrific community effort - many thanks to all who helped!

THANKS TO OUR WILDCAT SPONSORS!
