Get off the couch and onto the road...
We've got two great 5K runs coming up that benefit B-CC cluster schools. You can get in shape, look good for the holidays, and help good causes too!
First, Ellen's Run is on Sunday, October 19, 2008, at Candy Cane City Pavilion. There's a 5K run/walk at 9:00am and a kids' fun run at 10:00am. Proceeds benefit the B-CC High School Community Scholarship Fund and the Mental Health Assoc. of Montgomery County. On-line registration is closed, but you can still register on race day- check out the website.
The 11th annual Edgemoor Classic 5K will take place on Sunday, Nov. 2 at Bethesda Elementary at 8:00am. This great event raises funds for Bethesda Elementary School and the Bethesda Regional Library. There are prizes for the top middle school girl & boy finishers -let's be sure a Westland runner wins those! Any questions, please contact race directors Alysa Emden or Julie Doll.

I'm sending this newsletter out a bit early, just in case you forgot that Monday (10/13) is Westland's Open House. Parents are welcome to drop in and check out classes at any time during the day. Stop by for however long you'd like. It's a great opportunity to get a brief glimpse of your child's school day. And when you're there, please don't forget to stop by the PTA tables in the front hall to say hello and grab a quick cup of coffee!
We've got our first PTA meeting coming up on Wednesday, Oct. 22 from 7:00-9:00pm in Westland's Media Center. Principal Danny Vogelman will deliver his "State of the School" address, and we'll also hear from Officer Witherspoon and Ms. Dana Mathis of the Bethesda Police Dept. about what our kids are REALLY doing in Bethesda on Friday nights. They'll also talk about Internet safety and other issues of concern. It's information every parent should have, and we're delighted they can join us. We hope you can too!
And finally - at the risk of sounding like a broken record (remember those???) - we haven't reached our goal of 100% PTA membership yet, so if you haven't already done so, please join the PTA today! Memberships keep trickling in - we're doing great, but we need your help! |

Halloween Dance - Parent Volunteers Needed!
It's October, so that means it's time for the Halloween Dance! This SGA-sponsored event will take place on Friday, Oct. 24th from 7:00-9:00pm at Westland. SGA faculty advisor Cindy Villavicencio needs some parent volunteers to help - duties include helping students collect money, chaperoning, making decorations, and selling refreshments. Please e-mail Ms. Villavicencio if you can help. |

Community Partnerships Going Strong - Over 50 new A+ members in one week!
The Giant Bonus Bucks program began Oct. 3rd, and I'm thrilled to announce that over 50 people registered just last week! We now have 143 families who have designated Westland. Thank you so much!!! For all of you procrastinators out there, it's not too late. Just take two seconds and follow the directions below. It's easy, and it really helps Westland.
Click here to register for the Giant program. Westland's ID is 00660. Click here to register for Safeway's E-scrip program and designate Westland MS, Group # 6586159. Even if you registered last year, you must re-register this year for Westland to receive credit.
Westland is also a partner in Target's "Take Charge of Education" program. We receive 1% of all purchases made with a Target REDcard (a Target visa card, credit card, or check card). If you already have a REDcard account, just click here to designate Westland. Our school ID is 58213. If you don't have a card, you can get one next time you shop, or click here to apply.
Any questions? Contact PTA program coordinator Pam Gibson. |

Bicycle Safety Reminder...
It's great to see so many kids riding their bicycles to school and enjoying this fantastic fall weather. What's not so great to see is how many are not wearing helmets. Montgomery County law requires that all cyclists under the age of 18 wear helmets when cycling on public property (i.e., roads, the bike trail, etc.). Kids may leave home with their helmets on, but somewhere along the way, the helmets end up hanging on the handlebars. Many of us know of bike accident horror stories. My husband has been involved in two on the bike trail between Edgemoor & Westland - had he not been wearing a helmet, he likely would not be here today. Westland staff plans to work with the Bethesda bike police in upcoming weeks to educate kids about the importance of wearing helmets. Please talk with your kids about this. If nothing else, let them know that another parent is always watching on the roads and bike trails!
