Dust Off Those Running Shoes...
We've got two great 5K runs coming up that benefit B-CC cluster schools. You can get in shape, look good for the holidays, and help good causes too!
First, Ellen's Run is on Sunday, October 19, 2008, at Candy Cane City Pavilion. There's a 5K run/walk at 9:00am and a kids' fun run at 10:00am. Proceeds benefit Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School Community Scholarship Fund and the Mental Health Assoc. of Montgomery County. On-line registration closes at noon on Friday, Oct. 10th. Contact Nancy Wolfson with questions.
Second, the 11th annual Edgemoor Classic 5K will take place on Sunday, Nov. 2 at Bethesda Elementary at 8:00am. This neighborhood tradition raises funds for Bethesda Elementary and the Bethesda Regional Library. Any questions, please contact race directors Alysa Emden or Julie Doll.

It was absolutely fantastic to see so many Westland students, families, staff & friends out at Homestead Farm yesterday participating in Westland's first community service event of the year. Principal Danny Vogelman was there with his family (finally, a school event his son can really enjoy!), as were so many others. This was a new event for Westland and I thank PTA Community Service Co-Chairs Carrie Hurd and Andrea McCarren for coming up with the idea, and executing it so flawlessly - they had every detail, even down to the gorgeous weather, totally covered!
We've got another new event coming up as well. The Election Day Bake Sale will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 4th. The PTA will be selling food & drink to citizens patiently waiting in line to vote at the school. We need lots of volunteers to help bake, gather donations, and be on duty that day. The call for help from event chair Gwenn D'Anton will be coming out soon - please be as generous with your time and assistance as you can.
I'm delighted to report that the Westland Directory is being printed as I write. We hope to have it available for distribution later this week. Many thanks to Lisa Heaton for her amazing work in assembling all the student data! I'm also happy to report that our ad sales pretty much covered the cost of publication - again, many thanks to those Westland families who were so generous with their support.
And finally, we haven't reached our goal of 100% PTA membership yet, so if you haven't already done so, please join the PTA today! Over 900 individuals receive this on-line newsletter. If you are one of those who hasn't yet joined the PTA, please consider doing so.

First Community Service Event a Wild Success!
On Sunday, over 250 Westland students, staff, families and friends headed out to Homestead Farm, near Poolesville, MD to pick fresh produce to help stock local food banks. Together, they picked and donated over 3,300 pounds of apples, tomatoes, zucchini and squash! It was a great community effort, as over 17 local schools were represented. The food was delivered to Manna and to Bethesda Cares.
Click here to see photos of all the action! Many thanks to PTA Community Service Co-Chairs Carrie Hurd and Andrea McCarren for their hard work pulling together such a great event. And thanks to everyone who came out and picked! | |

Thanks for Supporting the Media Center!
The Westland community came through big time at the very end of the Sally Foster sale, tallying up a grand total of $10,274.00 in sales! Westland's Media Center will receive 50% of that amount, or $5,137.00 to help fund purchases of new technology and to update existing software and equipment. That financial support is critical to ensure that our kids are working with current technology - many, many thanks for your generosity! |
8th & 7th Grade Parents - Coffee & Conversation!
On Oct. 2nd, 8th grade parents enjoyed coffee and a chance to chat with Assistant Principal Ben Costa at Cosi in Bethesda. Thanks to Lorelei Bodie & Shelley Yeutter for organizing and to all for the great turnout!
On Wednesday, Oct. 22nd from 7:30 a.m. - 9:30am, 7th grade parents are invited to join PTA vice presidents Sally Boulter and Nancy Dana at the Red Dog Cafe, 8301 Grubb Rd, Silver Spring, MD 20910. |

Giant & Safeway Programs Off & Running - Target "Take Charge of Education" Added!
The Giant Bonus Bucks program began Oct. 3rd, so all your purchases since then have been earning money for Westland....assuming you've enrolled! Only 90 people have thus far. So, for those of you who were waiting until it really counted, now's the time! Please take a moment and register your cards.
Click here to register for the Giant program. Westland's ID is 00660. Click here to register for Safeway's E-scrip program and designate Westland MS, Group # 6586159. Even if you registered last year, you must re-register this year for Westland to receive credit.
Westland is also a partner in Target's "Take Charge of Education" program. We receive 1% of all purchases made with a Target REDcard (a Target visa card, credit card, or check card). If you already have a REDcard account, just click here to designate Westland. Our school ID is 58213. If you don't have a card, you can get one next time you shop, or click here to apply.
