Inspire Interest in Writing

As the new school year rapidly approaches, now is the time to re-think, re-vamp, and refine your writing centers, stations, and corners with the intention of inspiring interest in writing! Having an interest in writing is one of the prerequisites for writing. Appropriate nurturing of children's interest in writing involves more than paper and pencils! Encouraging engagement in writing begins with teacher and parent awareness and expansion of play-based writing center activities...Write Out of the Box! Incorporate activities into the writing station experience that support the component skills needed for handwriting and eventual compositional writing such as:

Butcher paper on the wall attached with painter's tape, a Tabletop Easel, and "writing" on paper under the table -- Promote shoulder stability needed for writing.

Twirling Wheel -- Encourages wrist extension for comfort when writing.

Picker Upper with Goldfish, Wind-Up toys, and Spinning Tops -- Support development of the tripod pencil grasp.

These are just a few of the endless, appropriate activities for the writing area that naturally support readiness for writing and make your writing center, station, or corner irresistible to young children!
