I Can Write My Own Name!
The writing of one's name marks a significant milestone in the mind and heart of a young child.  Next to the word "Mommy" or "Daddy," a child's name is perhaps the most meaningful word he knows and therefore writing that special word is quite an exciting accomplishment!  A common dilemma among teachers and parents whenboy writing teaching a writing-ready child how to print her name is whether or not to teach formation using all capital letters.  While the tendency may be to teach all capitals due to the idea that capital letters are easier to learn how to form, the appropriate strategy is to.....drum roll please.....teach name writing with capitalizing the first letter of the name only.  All remaining letters should be presented, modeled, and/or practiced using lowercase formation (e.g. Alex).  This teaching method reinforces the correct visual representation or "chunk" of letters in the child's name as he will see it across settings and throughout his life!

Using Wikki Stix to "write" one's name supports the cognitive aspect of learning how letters are formed without a pencil in the hand.

Another fun way to support engagement and young children's hands in development of letter formation is by using a variety of unique crayons found in our Incredible Crayons product category.

Remember - only capitalize the first letter when teaching name writing.  This best practice strategy sets every child up for success with writing one of the most important words ever written - his or her own name!
