| Get Swept Up in Crossing of Midline! |
|
Writing is one of the most complex skills a human being performs with his or her hands. Prior to grasping a pencil correctly and learning how to write efficiently, young children develop hand skills needed for writing through engagement in a wide-variety of hands-on play experiences and particiapation in activities of daily living (i.s. self-feeding, dressing, and perforning hygiene tasks). As administrators, educators and parents, our role is to understand and facilitate appropriate fine motor development in order to effectively support future, efficient writing performance of all young children. One important prerequisite for writing is crossing of midline.
Crossing midline indicates the two sides of th brain are working with each other. The first expression of crossing midline occurs through gross motor movements. Children's hands and arms cross the body in gross motor functional tasks like erasing the chalkboard, wiping off the table, sweeping the floor with a child-size broom, or raking with a child-size leaf rake.
Gross motor crossing midline activities support future fine motor writing tasks such as forming shapes, symbols, and letters that require the midline to be crossed (i.e. "N", "t", and the "+" plus or cross sign). Whether you are working with young children at home or at school, now is the time to get children swept up in functional crossing midline activities such as wiping, sweeping, and raking activities to support future writing success. Unlike teenagers, young children love these types of activities that serve thier skill development so well!
Happy Sweeping and Raking...Write Out of the Box!
