Vertical Opportunities for Learning Across the Curriculum!
March 2010
When thinking Write Out of the Box for young children, we must always consider positioning and the hidden value it brings to the learning experience. We increase the benefit of literacy, math, and critical thinking activities simply by orienting such activities into the upright or vertical plane. The four Pocket Charts in our Hands-On Fun Activities present vertical opportunities for learning literacy, math, and critical thinking! The vertical surface encourages the use of a child's shoulder against gravity, which supports hand and finger positioning for pencil holding. Manipulating the self-checking tiles in and out of the pocket chart facilitates use of the tripod grasp as well. All Pocket Chart activities support the arm and hand skills needed for writing while simultaneously building cognitive skills for academic success - Perfect!
Lead young children to increased skills across the curriculum by intentional incorporation of vertical learning opportunities at school and home!
