The Hidden Value of Classic Toys for Fine Motor Development...and More!

Isn't it reassuring to know that the classic toys we played with as children contained multiple opportunities for fine motor development and more? Perhaps the best news is those classic toys are still available today!

Our Wooden Classic Toys from Melissa & Doug naturally support development of young children. In terms of fine motor, classic toys allow children to experience a variety of shapes and weights in their hands to develop grasp patterns and get used to regulating different amounts of pressure in their hands (e.g. firm but gentle grasp pressure is necessary for managing a pencil effectively when writing). Beyond facilitating fine motor skills, Classic Toys facilitate other important skills such as:

  • Math Skills
  • Problem Solving
  • Critical Thinking
  • Organization Skills
  • Speech and Language Skills
  • Social Skills

Take a look at the wonderful Stacking Train and Take-Along Tool Kit that promote loads of creative talk time with a play partner and the opportunity to pretend to be in the productive adult world!

Teacher Feature

Huff and Puff Math

For the math center use "bricks", such as very small cubes or dice, and have the child make a tall house (tower) using wooden tongs or "busy fingers".  Then they can huff and puff and blow the house down.  It is fun to see who can blow over the tallest tower.  The activity is also good for comparing different types of  "bricks" to see which is easiest or hardest to blow down.  Counting, comparing, fine motor and NO TEACHER PREP...is there any more perfect activity!
