Hands-On Science Experiences

Spark Engagement in the Learning Process

Developmentally appropriate practice is reflected in a hands-on approach to learning in all domains including science. Curriculum guidelines in many states including Texas emphasize the importance of children's hands-on learning to support cognitive development. These guidelines naturally support hand skill development for handwriting and compositional writing as well! The domain of Physical Science includes intentional, hands-on engagement of children in exploration, investigation, observation, prediction, and questioning in order to acquire higher-level academic knowledge.

Small Group Activity
Use small group activities in science to heighten verbal expression and facilitate question-asking. Children can pick up our Frogs and Buttlerflies with the Tweezers including a Pillow and use the Set of 4 Magnifying Glasses to examine these critters. Encourage questions about the animals' nutritional needs, habitats, and living habits!

Another critical focus of curriculum guidelines in science is on classifying and sorting of objects by attributes (i.e. color, size, and shape) to facilitate problem solving and comparison skill building. These cognitive skills support learning in all domains, including letter recognition and formation necessary for handwriting!

Science Center Activity
Children can closely observe our Insects and Turtles with our large Magnifying Glass and use the Picker Upper with a Pillow to manipulate and compare the faux animals for similarities and differences in color, size, and shape.

We as educators and parents can and MUST increase the "spark" factor in classrooms and home settings by incorporating a wide-variety of tools and manipulatives into children's hands-on play and learning. Integrating fine motor activities into science increases the engagement factor of children's learning and lays the foundation for the development of hand skill proficiency and inquiring minds!
