Tool Time!
By:  Marianne Gibbs, MOT, OTR
When getting ready for the beginning of school, remember the basic tools for fine motor skill development. Tools such as Picker Uppers, Tweezers, Squeezers, Mini Tongs, Mini Grabbers, Zoo Sticks, Farm Sticks, and 8" Wooden Tongs all support development of the tripod pencil grasp without the use of a pencil! By using these basic tools with a "Pillow," the "Sleeping Fingers" sleep while the "Busy Fingers" play with our super tools to sort and/or stack manipulatives of all kinds and support development of the tripod pencil grasp. Cognitive skills are boosted by sorting objects. Understanding the concept of same and different assists children in building visual discrimination skills, which is necessary for discriminating between letter and number forms.  Here are a few activity ideas to incorporate into your classroom or home:
Mix and match a wide-variety of Tool Time implements with Manipulatives to create engaging activities that support fine motor and cognitive development of young children at the same time!

The Complete Box is a wonderful tool for teachers and parents to use with children 3-6 years old.  Children love the box activities because they are play-based and not seen as work.  Yet, each activity has a special purpose for building fine motor skills.  The Complete Box activities have small and large group application, but are great for individuals as well.
