As an occupational therapist, I worked with children who needed fine motor development support and teachers who wanted to assist their students, but did not have the strategies to do so. Many students in classrooms I visited did not have special needs and yet they struggled with their hand skills. The creation of the Complete Box was inspired after watching hundreds of young children benefit from the implementation of appropriate, play-based activities to support pencil grasp and handwriting development.
For use in the classroom or at home, the Complete Box provides teachers and parents with 20 FUN ACTIVITIES designed to develop the hand skills needed for holding a pencil and supporting the acquisition of handwriting. The Complete Box is a tool for teachers and parents to use with children 3-6 years old and contains a variety of items that facilitate the tripod grasp used for efficient pencil holding, digit individuation, palmar arch development, wrist extension, and more!
Implementation Suggestions:
Incorporating Complete Box activities that children love into your daily classroom routine is important for children's hand skill development and so easy to do!
- Teacher-directed, small group activities
- Center activity (pre-writing, science, math, art) - one at a time is plenty!
- Plopables - simply "plop" one of the items from the Complete Box out onto desktops and have children "play and pass" the items to their friends as part of the morning routine. Younger children will need your guidance on knowing when to pass the item.
Remember, the Complete Box contains many favored activities and provides play with a purpose! Developing hand skills needed for holding a pencil and handwriting requires consistent hands-on experiences with a variety of fine motor items and your consistent implementation...Write Out of the Box!
