Helping the Earth...
Make your own laundry soap without all the chemicals (and they are safe for HE washers too)!  There are liquid soaps, powdered soaps, soaps you cook, soaps you don't cook, soaps that you can make with your children.

From Tipnut Homemade Laundry Soap

Here is a Recipe to try:

MY FAVORITE -
Powdered Laundry Detergent - Recipe #4
2 cups Fels Naptha Soap (finely grated)
1 cup Washing Soda
1 cup Borax (this is in many detergents, but should be kept out of the reach of children and should not be ingested).

Mix well and store in an airtight plastic container.
Use 2 tablespoons per full load.

  Fun Family Science Experiments

Fun with Cornstarch
Cornstarch is neat to play with because it acts like both a solid and a liquid. Here are some ideas:

Take 1/2 cup cornstarch and put it in a small tub (like a margarine tub), the slowly add water, a teaspoon at a time and stir it up. Feel the mixture with your fingers and hands each time you add water.  Continue adding water a bit at a time, until it becomes a thick paste.

Pick it up and play with it. Squeeze it between your fingers. Open your hand and let it ooze out.

For more fun... add 3 drops of food coloring, but don't mix them in. See what happens as the food coloring disperses through the mixture.

For even more fun... see what happens when you leave the mixture out overnight. (It will appear to be dry and caked.)  Stir it up and add more water to see what happens

When you are all done, pour into the trash and rinse out the container... VOILA... you're cleaned up!

  Strawberries are in Season
Fresh and Fruity Freeze Pops (from Emeril Lagasse)
to make 4 pops

1 1/2 cups strawberries (sliced from top to bottom)
1/2 cup raspberries
1/2 cup blueberries
1/2 cup Simple Syrup (1 1/2 cups water and 1 1/2 cups sugar brought to a boil in a heavy saucepan  without stirring, then removed from heat and allowed to cool. This will keep for up to 2 months in the refrigerator)

Put all of the ingredients in a blender and puree them until smooth (about 30 seconds).

Divide the mixture among 4 paper cups (about 1/2 cup in each).

Stand a plastic spoon or an ice cream stick in the center of each cup.

Cover each cup with a square of aluminum foil (make a hole for the stick to stick through).

Freeze until set, which will be about 8 hours or overnight.

Tear away the paper cups and ENJOY!!

You can also use mangoes, bananas, peaches, nectarines pineapples, cherries or any fruits that you love!
