Meet Your Professor CAPT Luke Ott
Professor Luke Ott is a member of the adjunct faculty for the NGS/U and brings a unique mix of military, private industry, and academic expertise to his classes and projects. CAPT Ott is the Director of Strategic Communications for U.S. Second Fleet and is a pilot for Delta Airlines. He has a Bachelors of Arts from the University of Toledo, an MBA from Emory University, and received his Six Sigma Black Belt from NGS/U.
Captain Ott says, "Being part of the NGS/U faculty has given me the opportunity to work with process improvement teams from organizations such as United Technologies, Boeing, the Space Shuttle Program, and the U.S. Coast Guard. I find it very rewarding and exciting to advance the individual skill sets of the students, which in turn empowers them to be able to bring tangible and quantifiable performance improvements to their organization. I've been a student or instructor in some capacity or over 30 years, and one of the ongoing challenges has been finding ways to execute and advance academic theory via practical applications. By requiring that each cohort conducts Master Business Projects, we incorporate the process improvement tools into the organization's business model, thus becoming a force multiplier and a function of their leadership, resource management, and strategic planning efforts."

NGS/U Launches New Initiative at Traverse City, MI
Dr. Robert McManus, Vice President, Student Services presents plaque to Vice Admiral John P. Currier | In conjunction with the start of its first class in the Great Lakes Region, the University participated in activities hosted by the Commander of the Coast Guard Air Station, Traverse City, MI on March 18, 2010. Former NGS/U Project Champion, CDR Jonathan Spaner presided over a ceremony that will eventually result in the establishment of several US Coast Guard cohorts throughout the Michigan area. The event coincided with an official visit by the US Coast Guard Chief of Staff, Vice Admiral John P. Currier. The Admiral expressed delight that NGS/U has made its programs available at Traverse City, and cited the long relationship that has existed between the Coast Guard and the University. Dr. Robert A. McManus, Vice President,Student Services and Professor Matt Boyne were on hand to present a plaque and express thanks on behalf of our President, Dr. Robert J. Gee. The Traverse City, MI cohort will pursue the Master of Science degree. Classes began there on Friday, March 19th, under the capable instruction of Prof. Matt Boyne. While Homeland Security & Defense is compatible with the US Coast Guard mission, some students chose to earn their degrees in Quality Systems Management. The result is a cohort comprised of professionals who will collaborate to provide a two-pronged study of process improvement for the benefit of their command. Commander Tom McDevitt, Traverse City Air Station Operations Officer, served as the focal point-of-contact during the visit. On behalf of Commander Spanner, he was instrumental in guiding the activities of the day, and will serve as the MS Class Leader. Overall the event was a success, and provides the foundation for the establishment of other cohorts at the various Coast Guard Stations based in the Great Lakes area. |
