Our counselors do such amazing work helping young people in our community that I frequently use this spot to brag about all the wonderful things Alternative House is doing and the young people we've helped.   Sometimes it's easy to leave out all the children, teens and young adults who we haven't been able to reach.

Over the past ten years, four shelters for teenagers in Northern Virginia have closed -- primarily due to lack of funding. Two years ago we had to close our community-based programs for disadvantaged children in East Springfield due to funding cuts. For every opening in our Assisting Young Mothers program we have seven applications and we currently have a waiting list of 39 young women.

We are doing great work but there is still so much more to do. This coming year our goal is to expand services so that we can help more of the young people in need. We've made a start at this by hiring a new counselor to help homeless unaccompanied high school students in Southern Fairfax County. We're looking for ways to provide additional housing for homeless young women and children in our Assisting Young Mothers and seeking funding to re-open our community-based programs in Eastern Springfield. It is shaping up to be a dynamic year and, as always, it's only possible through your support.  Judith

Special Thank You to HomeAid Northern Virginia!!!
Residential Teen Counselors Michelle Stitt, Lindsay Schwartz, Teal Dye, and Chris Mishik showing off new shelving made possible by HomeAid.
HomeAid is a
non-profit organization that leverages the resources of the homebuilding community and
their corporate partners to conduct major renovations to shelters and homes.  This provides safe, stable living arrangements for previously homeless individuals and families, including the teens at our shelter.

HomeAid came to the Washington area in 2001 and their first project was the major renovation and expansion of Alternative House's shelter on Gallows Road in Vienna, VA.

HomeAid recently helped build sturdy shelving units in the basement of the teen shelter that will greatly increase the capacity to store much needed food, clothing, and other supplies for our programs.  They also replaced the front door lock,  worn carpeting, and  a large section of a fence.

A job well done!!  We give a special thank you to HomeAid and their partners: Heritage Contracting, Builder's First Source, Woodcrafters, Southland Insulators, and Builder's Floor ServiceWe value and appreciate all your support!!!!

Volunteer Spotlight
Philip Jaffa in Teen Shelter Kitchen
Philip Jaffa in Teen Shelter kitchen

Philip Jaffa has been volunteering at the Alternative House Teen Shelter for 9 years.  He initially volunteered to cook Friday dinners but then decided to forego the evening traffic (what traffic?) to cook breakfast on Sundays.

Philip is amazing because he volunteers at Alternative House every Sunday!!  Philip was touched recently by the visit from "Tina": a former teen shelter resident who stopped by the Teen Shelter briefly to say "thank you" for the help she had received.  "One of the challenges with a 'transitional' program like Alternative House is that you don't know how things ultimately work out," says Philip. "What walked out the door at Alternative House eight years ago was a 13 year old girl with a world full of trouble--and none of it of her own making.  What walked in the door was a confident grown woman about to graduate from college."

"At Alternative House," he says, "we really do make a difference."

Philip is originally from Columbus, Ohio and has been living in Arlington,VA with his wife for 30 years.  They have 2 sons, one who is an electrical engineer who runs a test and evaluation lab for phased array radars, and the other who is finishing up a PhD in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at Notre Dame.   "One electrical, one mechanical," says Philip, "so between the two of them they can fix just about anything."  His hobbies, he says,
include running and biking--and waiting for his sons to fix things around the house.

Thank you Philip!!...for the 9 years of making a difference in lives of the young people who come to the Teen Shelter.

Alternative House Shelter and Homeless Youth Initiative work together to provide timely help.

Alternative House recently helped "Mary", an 18 year old girl from Vienna, VA, who was striving to finish her senior year in high school. "Mary" had been staying with a friend's family for a year after leaving her grandmother's residence.

Unfortunately, this housing arrangement fell apart, resulting in "Mary" sleeping on the streets overnight. She was referred by her high school counselor to Alternative  House's Emergency Shelter for Teenagers, where she was provided a safe place to stay. We also assisted her with identifying and creating a plan to accomplish education and career goals.

"Mary" has successfully transitioned into Alternative House's Homeless Youth Initiative.  She has safe stable housing and other help she needs so that she can achieve her goal of graduating from high school.

Employee Spotlight
Lindsay Schwartz

If you come in to the Emergency Shelter for Teenagers during the week, chances are you will run into Lindsay Schwartz, one of our counselors. Lindsay is always smiling and is constantly helping the teens.

Lindsay is originally from Baltimore (go Orioles!!) and graduated from George Mason University with a Bachelors in Social Work. She started out as an intern at Alternative House and she did such an amazing job, we hired her as a counselor; at first part-time and now in her current full-time position.

Her hobbies include traveling, baking, music and just hanging out with friends. We are very lucky to have Lindsay!!!
