Here at Alternative House you would think the holidays are upon us. The young people in our programs are excited. They find it hard to concentrate. There is anticipation in the air. What could it be? Why the end of the school year, of course. This is an exciting time at Alternative House.

We've been to and held numerous graduation celebrations for the young people in our programs. Seven of our Homeless Youth Initiative high school students received their diplomas and are off to higher education and employment. We also celebrated with our graduating seniors at the Culmore Teen Center and the children making the big step to Middle School in our Safe Youth Projects.   We're planning a summer filled with educational field trips, cultural activities and fun things like trips to the pool. I hope your summer is also filled with fun. Judith

Soccer Tournament Champs

 culmore coccer champs

Congratulations to the Alternative House Culmore Teen Center soccer team, which played in a Northern Virginia soccer tournament, sponsored by local police departments in early May.  By winning the tournament they were not only awarded a beautiful trophy but also 32 tickets to the National USA Team vs. Brazil friendly soccer match played at the sold-out RFK Stadium. The participants were Yoni Sorto, Byron Hernandez, Emmanuel Alvarado, Martin Barahona, Kevin Buruca, Mohamed Raza, Kenis Alvarez and Alejandro Diaz.

Graduation Celebration!!!!

On Monday June 11 St. Stephen's United Methodist Church hosted a graduation barbeque celebration for seven high school seniors from our Homeless Youth Initiative program.  The graduating seniors were treated to friendly hospitality and a great barbeque feast provided by Moveable Feast catering.  We appreciate the St. Stephen's community for making this celebration possible!
Thank You!!!

Valerie Brown
Valerie Brown and AYM Program Coordinator Angela Davis

Valerie has been volunteering just a few months and she has already  made a huge impact on our Assisting Young Mothers Program (AYM).  Valerie not only helps out with childcare, she has also has been helping to improve the landscaping of the AYM town homes.

Making the AYM program a family affair, Valerie along with her husband and father have been beautifying the grounds of the townhouses by cleaning up the yards, planting flowers and performing handyman projects. One AYM home Team Brown is building a new play-water-table for toddlers.  Thank you to Team Brown for making a huge difference for the mothers, babies, and as well as our staff!
Request for host home

As our some of our Homeless Youth Initiative students continue to celebrate their high school graduation and move on, we have an immediate need for a host home for one of our new program participants.

At the young age of 8, "Greg" found himself in a new country, surrounded by an unfamiliar culture and unsupportive caregivers. Shuffled from extended family member to family member for years, Greg was at times without adequate food or sleeping quarters. With no one to share his struggles with, Greg kept his circumstances to himself and focused on his educational goals and completing high school. Presently, Greg has been told that he is unable to remain with any family members.

As an 18 year old high school student with no reliable income and few supportive relationships in his life, we feel this young man could benefit from the stability and support of a host home environment. We ask anyone who has space in their home and room in their hearts to consider hosting this young man until his proposed graduation date of June 2013.

HYI will continue to provide non-residential services to this young man, but we hope to locate safe and stable housing for him soon. A supportive housing environment would help him achieve his goal of high school graduation and ultimately self-sufficiency. If interested please contact Housing Coordinator Juan Leon at (703)343-3551 Juan_Leon@thealternativehouse.org  or for more details.

Thank you Micropact Corporation

We would like to thank the Micropact Corporation for donating some much-needed items for the Homeless Youth Initiative Program! Along with lawn care products such a weed-control spray, rakes and a sprinkler system, Micropact donated the item that HYI has been longing for the most: a lawn mower!

For four hours company employees worked hard to beautify the exterior of the property by removing dead shrubbery and planting beautiful plants to compliment the landscape. After taking the new lawn mower for a spin across the yard, the property looked fantastic!

We appreciate the kindness and generosity of individual volunteers and groups like Micropact, who donate their time and money towards helping brighten the lives of those we serve.
