Twenty percent of the children in Fairfax County go hungry at least once a month because there isn't enough food in the house. That figure jumps to 30% among Hispanic youth. That's according to the Fairfax County 2010 annual youth survey done each year in our public schools. Sadly, that figure doesn't come as a surprise to me. When our Teen Center Staff tell me of young people trying to sneak food off their plates from the dinner we serve, so they can bring it home to feed other children, I know we need to do more to make sure young people are fed. To help meet this need, our food distribution is up almost 60% since 2008; and the only way that is possible is because of you. This Thanksgiving we collected 67 baskets to give to homeless young people and hungry children. It meant full tables for many. December is just days away and already we can see that people are opening their hearts to give to those who are not as fortunate. On their behalf, thank you. I know if they could, they would thank you themselves. Judith |

Assisting Young Mothers
"Rochelle" was raised by her grandfather from infancy. When her grandfather passed away, Rochelle became homeless and was living from friend to friend. Shortly after she became pregnant, she ran out of friends and entered a homeless shelter. From there, she came to Assisting Young Mothers (AYM) where she gave birth to her daughter, Samantha, who has Down's syndrome. We were able to help Rochelle find the early intervention services available to her, including physical therapy for Samantha. Rochelle is enrolled in community college with a focus on early childhood development. She has earned A's in many of her classes and is working at a child care center. She hopes to soon graduate from AYM and find a place of her own for herself and her child. |

Holiday Dinner Baskets Needed
Each year, Alternative House works with community members to make the holiday season special for all of our young people. We are asking individuals and groups to donate Holiday Food Baskets for the December Holidays that will provide a delicious meal for a family of six.
To ensure that the young people we serve are able to enjoy a complete holiday meal, we have created a specific list of Holiday food items for you to add to your basket. If you have any questions regarding the Holiday Food Baskets, please contact Gina Cocomello at 703 506-9191.
As always Thank You for your support!

Help Fill Holiday Wish Lists for Youth
For many of the young people in our programs the only Holiday gifts they will receive are those donated by people like you. If you, your office, faith group or family would like to adopt one or more of our young people for the Holidays we will supply you with a Wish List that each of our young people have filled out. Then you can select the gifts and deliver them to us by December 11. We will even do the gift wrapping for you. Each of our clients has selected three gifts under $30 each. For more information on this program please call me at 703 506-9191 or email Gina Cocomello
