A Trip to the Zoo
Elephant

The Teens at our Shelter recently took a field trip to the National Zoo. A 16 year old Shelter resident wrote about the experience. Read what he had to say.

Zoo story

Summer days are winding down. Somehow it seems like it just started! The young people in our programs have had a good summer, thanks to your support. Funds donated by our community in June have allowed us to take young people on field trips to the zoo, the swimming pool, parks, museums and sporting events. We've been able to provide lunch, dinner and snacks for children who otherwise would have been hungry; and we've been able to keep our Community-based Youth Services open expanded hours so young people have safe places to go when school is closed. I don't think our youth have shifted to think about the coming school year just yet. They're still focused on trips to the pool and ice cream parties -- but at Alternative House, our focus is turning to fall. Basic school supplies are expensive, too expensive for many of the families we serve. They also can be out of reach to the homeless high school students served by the Homeless Youth Initiative. I hope you will once again be generous this fall as we fill our young people's backpacks with the items they'll need in the coming school year. As always...we couldn't do it without you! Judith

Teen Center Success Story

Chauncey began coming to the Culmore Teen Center as he first started middle school. Over the years the Teen Center staff has had the pleasure of watching Chauncey grow into a mature and responsible young man. Chauncey took a computer course that sparked his interest and he went on to receive a certification in computer systems while still in high school. After Chauncey graduated from Stuart High School, he spent his summer free-lancing as a computer specialist, and then headed off to Norfolk State University to study information technology. Chauncey is excited to be the first in his family to go to college. He continues to keep in touch with Teen Center staff and wants to come back to help others who face challenges similar to his own.

School Supplies Needed
Client with School Bus  The first day of school is almost here. Please help us send Alternative House children and teens back to school with new backpacks and school supplies. Without support from the community the young people who participate in our Community-based Youth Services - the Culmore Teen Center, Annandale Safe Youth Project, Culmore Safe Youth Project and Annandale Targeted Youth Program - will go back to school without the basics they need. We need supplies for students in grades 4-12. For more information contact

HYI Grad 2011

Our Homeless Youth Initiative had 13 seniors graduate from high school in June. With the generosity of some very special donors we are able to give each of them an "Off to College" basket as they leave our program this month.

The young people in our HYI program and the Alternative House staff would like to thank; Shiner Roofing, Association Management Group, Epiphany Methodist Church, and Immanuel Presbyterian Church. Your generosity will help these young people off to a great start.

With many hours of help and hard work from our Website and Technology Volunteer Norm Thompson, Alternative House has a new website. We can't Thank Norm enough. The new website is great.

Please take a few minutes and check it out. It is loaded with information, stories and pictures about our programs and services for homeless and at-risk youth and teens. Let us know what you think we would love to hear from you.
