FLY LIKE AN EAGLE
They shall mount up with wings like eagles...
(Isaiah 40:31)
The Eagle is often referred to as the king of birds. It dwells in high places and possesses great strength and can fly at great speeds. Because it is such an exceptional bird, it is held in high esteem. Many people however do not know that it takes a long time for an Eagle to develop into his full potential. First of all, he is not as easily produced as other birds. For instance, a chicken is produced in 21 days and is generally sent to the market in 8 or 9 weeks. However an Eagle lays one or two eggs; both parents of the Eagle incubate the egg for approximately 149 days and the young eagle remains in the nest for the same length of time.
The Eagle is a solitary bird, that usually flies alone... he never flies in flocks. The Eagle has a wing span up to 9 feet and can weigh 15 pounds. He flies effortless at 60 miles per hour and can plunge at 100 miles per hour. He is strong enough to pick up twice his weight.
In the passage above, Isaiah is offering words of encouragement to Israel as they must go through rebuilding after Babylonian exile. The entire passage tells them to wait on the Lord as they renew their strength. They should understand that they are God's people and as such they have potential greatness. However greatness takes time. As God's people, we have to develop into the greatness that God expects for us.
Some of us are going through stages of development and rebuilding right now. Just as Israel had to rebuild after the Babylonian captivity, we are rebuilding from failed marriages; or financial instability; or illnesses; or a lack of harmony in our nation. Rebuilding is not easy, but when the goal is to be like the Eagle, we are willing to wait and develop in God's time and plan for us.
My hope is that all of us will remember that we are born to fly like an Eagle. In that regard, the sky is the limit.
