 FRIENDSHIP!

A man who has friends must himself be friendly, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. (Proverbs 18:24)

Have you ever been lonely even though there are many people all around you? If you have, perhaps it is because you did not really have any one that you considered a close friend.  Close friends are hard to come by.  Although I have had many wonderful friends during my life time, I cannot say that all of them were close friends.  There is something special about the relationship that close friends have.

Many songs have been written about close friends.  For instance, the song entitled, "Friends Never Say Goodbye" by Elton John points out that friendship may last forever even though there may be misunderstandings along the way.  In the song, "Lean On Me", Bill Withers points out how a friend proves to be like an angel in times of distress and pain.  Dionne Warwick does a beautiful rendition of "That's What Friends Are For" (written by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager).  But of course I must not talk about secular songs, as beautiful as they are, without talking about the hymn, "NO NOT ONE."  It begins with the line, "There's not a friend like the lowly Jesus....No, not one."  Christians know how close a friend  Jesus is.  When we feel all alone, we can be sure that Jesus is with us.

In the passage above, Solomon reminds us that we must reciprocate friendship if we want to have friends.  Friends can be trusted.  Friends are not judgmental.  Friends tell friends the truth even when it is unpopular to do so.  Friends care about one another.  Friends help one another when the need is there.  Friends are there in good times and bad times.  What a wonderful feeling you have when you have a true friend.  Do you have a real friend?  I hope so, but even if you do not have a "person" that you can call a friend, don't despair.  If you are a Christian, you have a friend who sticks closer than a brother.  His name is Jesus! He meets all of the standards that are listed above.  Oh by the way, don't leave out the song, "WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS!
