THE BEAUTY OF OLD AGE!
The silver-haired head is a crown of glory (Proverbs 16:31a)
In a couple of weeks my wife will celebrate a birthday. I will not tell you how old she will be. I will just use my age as a point of reference.
Before the end of this year, I will be 63 years old. When I was in my teens, that seemed like a very large number. Surprisingly, the number 63 does not seem as large anymore. However I must admit, I cannot run as fast as I could then; nor can I see as far (without glasses); and yes my hair is graying every day. Yet, the passage above states that the "silver-head is a crown of glory!" How so? Consider the following thoughts about old age.
1. Old age is a time of "Beautiful Memories." I can remember many joyful experiences during my life time. And those experiences that were challenging, allowed me to depend on God as He brought me through safely.
2. Old age is a time of "Beautiful Hopes." I have learned to put less emphasis on the past and more emphasis on the future. I also realize that this world is less important in the grand scheme of things. I know that God has eternal blessings for me as I am Heaven bound. I am not rushing anything, but my hope is built on the promises of God that I will have eternal life with Him.
3. Old age is a time of "Beautiful Solitude." I am no longer anxious about the cares of the world. I know that God has the whole world in His hands and He will take care of me. My wife and I have learned to enjoy a quiet evening together at home. Our children are grown; successful; and they are Christians. I am blessed to know that their Heavenly future is secure.
4. Old age has a "Beautiful Blessedness." As young people we made many mistakes. We still make a few as we get older, but we are more likely to be able to say: "I've been there, and I don't want to do that anymore." We are blessed to appreciate how God's grace has brought us through many trials and tribulations. We are blessed to say, "we made it."
5. Old age has "Beautiful Duties." We have testimonies to give. We should comfort the young believers. We should warn them of the pitfalls in life. Be honest with them. We should have a smile on our faces as we explain to them the Beauty of Life. Our duty is to praise God for His faithfulness to us.
In conclusion, as our hair begins to gray, don't fret, for there is "BEAUTY IN OLD AGE!"
