For many people today, "wait" is an unpopular word. They have a microwave mentality. We want things our way and we want them right away. We have a problem when we must wait in lines. We don't like being in traffic that is backed up. And if we find ourselves in a difficult position, we want a positive solution immediately. Unfortunately, life does not always work like that. Sometimes, we just have to wait.
Even Christians are impatient sometimes. We pray to God and expect Him to give us a speedy answer. Perhaps we want Him to heal our bodies right away. Or maybe we need a financial blessing to pay a bill that is overdue. After we pray, we wait; and we wait; and we wait. It seems that God will never answer our prayers. It just may be that God wants us to learn how to wait, before he grants our petitions.
In the passage above, David is probably on the run. Some believe it was written during a time that Saul wanted to kill him. David knew that God would eventually deliver him from that difficult situation. He tells the readers to wait on the Lord.
I've learned some valuable lessons about waiting. 1. When we wait, we get in step with God's timing. 2. Waiting helps us avoid making rash decisions that can turn out badly. 3. Waiting causes us to deliberate on the circumstances as God leads us in the right direction. 4. During our wait, we can examine our motives for what we are requesting and realize that God may not want that for us. 5. When we receive the blessing after we have waited for it, we appreciate it more.
How should we wait? 1.We should wait patiently. There is no use getting flustered when things don't happen right away. 2. We should wait silently. Complaining about our circumstances won't change things, and may make them worse. 3.We should wait actively. Do something else constructive while we are waiting for God's answer. 4.Wait courageously. No matter what happens while you are waiting, be secure that God is working it out. And we already know, when He does work it out, it will be right on time. Wait on the Lord!
