The tragedy at Fort Hood this past week is "difficult to understand."  Our prayers go out to the families of those who were killed as well as to the survivors.  The fallen soldiers gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country.  They will be remembered for their valor.  It appears that some of the wounded are still in very serious condition.  I hope you will join me in prayers for their complete recovery.   Most of us will experience a wide range of emotions in times like these.  And perhaps that is a positive thing.  But let us always remember, that God is still on the throne.  He will never leave us nor forsake us.  And that  is a  fact that "we can understand."

REGRETS

I have sinned against the Lord, David confessed to Nathan.
(2 Samuel 12:13)

How many times have you heard people say, "If I just had it to do over again, I would do it differently."  In essence they regret some of the actions they have taken and some of the statements they have made.  In his book, "IF EXPERIENCE IS SUCH A GOOD TEACHER, WHY DO I KEEP REPEATING THE COURSE?" J. Ellsworth Kalas states the following: "Good regret leads us to repent and thus to change, and to be rid of the impossible burden.  Destructive regret causes us to push the troublesome thought underground, where it begins to eat away at our psyche, or to immerse ourselves in a misery of remorse without actually doing anything to change or to be free."

In the passage above, David realizes his sin with Bathsheba and against Uriah.  Although it took a while, this realization brought with it regret.  As a man after God's own heart, the regret lead to repentance.  It was only then that God forgave David and he could move on in a positive way with his life.

All of us have done things that we have come to regret.  However, since we cannot change the past, we must possess "good regret"  that leads to change.  Can you think of anything that you regret having done or said?  Have you repented to God for it?  After all, even if it was done to another person, it was also a sin against God.  The good news is that God's Grace is sufficient to help us change, and move on with our lives while avoiding the same mistakes in the future.  David's regret lead him to be a better person.  I know that our regrets can do the same for us.  "Praise the Lord!"
