Greetings!,

It feels really good to go to work at the Maine Women's Fund each day knowing that the president is committed to the very same issues that drive our work. The Obama administration has made women's economic security a key priority. In fact, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was the first law the president signed after taking office. And then in April, when we were busy getting ready for our annual Leadership Luncheon, there was quite a bit of news coverage of the White House's ongoing efforts related to women's economic security. Catching up on some of that news, I stumbled on the text of a speech the president gave at the White House Forum on Women and the Economy.

Talking about his motivations when he goes to work, President Obama said: "... as a father, one of the highlights of my day is asking my daughters about their day, their hopes and their futures. That's what drives me every day when I step into the Oval Office."

I do not have daughters, but I do have four nieces who live here and abroad, as well as one grand-niece. When I go to work every day, it is my goal to make their generations' futures brighter, too. As a child growing up in the 1960s and 70s, my family told me almost daily that my three older brothers' world was not my world, and that I would not be able to do what they were going to do in every aspect of life: personal and professional. That erroneous message propels me every day to fulfill our mission of investing in the power and potential of women and girls.

The Fund is planning for the future. Most critically, we're working to ensure that the Fund exists as long as it's needed. Since it began awarding grants to support programs that make a difference for women and girls in Maine in 1990, the Fund has invested $1.7 million across the state. And we plan to continue making grants and advocating for change for as long as it takes to create a state in which opportunities are not available to people based on their gender, but on their qualities and character.

Thank you for all you do to support women and girls in Maine, and for joining us in ensuring that we do as much as we can, for as long as it takes.

MCHMaking Change Happen

Last fall, the 30 participants of our Girl's Grantmaking Initiative were paired up with a dozen members of the Maine Women's Fund community and staff who acted as facilitators. The girls reviewed seventeen grant proposals, practiced advocacy and consensus building, and created their own definitions of philanthropy. Ultimately, the girls granted $5,000 to the following projects: Youth Alternatives Ingraham, Hardy Girls Healthy Women, A Company of Girls, Safe Voices and South Sudan Nuer Community Development Organization. Check out this terrific video of the event.
