Dear ,

Magic

This image seemed

particularly apt this month as we solicit nominations for the Sarah Orne Jewett and the Samantha Smith Awards. Each year, the Maine Women's Fund honors Maine women and girls who have stretched beyond their comfort zones and made magic happen in their communities. We are accepting nominations through our Regional Advisory Councils. We want to know who has inspired you!

As part of the leadership transition at the Fund, this past year we engaged our community in conversations about "where the magic happens" for this organization.  Those conversations resulted in a refinement of strategic directions, stretch goals, and -- in order to position the Fund to achieve those directions and goals -- an organizational restructuring. I'm excited to announce that two staff at the Maine Women's Fund are stepping into new roles that will be instrumental to the Fund's success. Lauren Dietlin, who has served for three years as the Director of Development, is our new Chief Operating Officer, and will oversee internal operations.  Sonya Tomlinson, who joined the Fund in the spring as the Administrative Assistant is the new Office and Grants Manager. Please join me in congratulating Lauren and Sonya on their well-deserved promotions.

May the month of January find you reaching toward the magic in your lives.

Cathy

AwardsAward Nominees

We're looking for a few outstanding women and girls in Maine! The Maine Women's Fund is seeking nominees for its annual Samantha Smith and Sarah Orne Jewett awards. Please send your nominations (contact by counties list below) by BY FEBRUARY 1, 2012

The Samantha Smith Award is given to a young woman (ages 12-21) from Maine who works to promote social changes in her community; inspires other girls to become active in supporting long-lasting change in Maine; uses her voice to boldly influence others; and understands the power of philanthropy to make a difference. All nominees for the Samantha Smith award will also be considered for the Girls Rock! Awards. Presented by Waterville-based Hardy Girls Healthy Women, these awards honor girls ages 12-19 who are using their voices in bold and powerful ways to make Maine a better place for all girls. Winners of a Girls Rock! Award will receive recognition and a $250 savings bond at the March 30th-April 1st, 2012 Girls Rock! Weekend in Augusta.

The Sarah Orne Jewett Award is given to a Maine woman who exhibits the attributes of the women in Jewett's works of fiction: true grit, independence, courage, humor, and discipline.

Women Standing Together: February 9

WOOLY ROUNDSJoin us for a collaborative, round table session, with our guest entrepreneur, Cyndi Prince, founder of WOOLY ROUNDS. WOOLY ROUNDS are felted balls of wool that you use in your clothes dryer to help separate your clothes. Having several in your dryer creates a constant motion that allows for more air to circulate around your wet laundry so your clothes will dry faster. The more dryer balls you use, the less time it takes to dry a load and you can reduce your dry time by 10 -25%.  Wool is used because it helps reduce static, naturally soften clothes due to the friction of the balls against the fabric, and makes clothes fresher and smell cleaner since wool has the ability to absorb toxins and odors.

When: February 9 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Where: Portland Harbor Hotel

Calling all Entrepreneurs: February 15

We're excited -- watching the growth of entrepreneurship among women, nationally and in Maine. We're excited by what women are bringing to innovation, business models, product development and leadership. We're impressed by what this means in terms of returns to investors and communities. We want to see more of these ventures get access to networks, capital and resources. As part of Maine Entrepreneur Week, the Maine Women's Fund is bringing together a team of rock star Women Standing Together advisors who also want to see women-led ventures grow.

Join us for "Calling all Female Entrepreneurs" on February 15 where you'll have the opportunity to practice your pitch and address key growth opportunities and challenges. Pitches are limited to 10-minutes with 10-minute feedback sessions. Space is limited, so reservations are required.
