Dear ,
You know that proverb: "March comes in like a lion?" I certainly woke up March 1 with a "GRRRR" in my belly and a lion at the foot of the bed. This is the agitator in me, and I've come to embrace it (and the accompanying impatience) like a core value. Lately, it's been rooted in themes of incremental change vs. transformation. I am agitated with the notion that incremental growth in women's participation and economic influence is satisfactory. On one hand, I appreciate that women are defining their success on their own terms. On the other hand, I am agitated that it's possible that transformational effects of women in leadership may never come to fruition.
Fortunately, March activities at the Maine Women's Fund offer a nice catharsis to my agitation. Grant proposals are due on March 25. Grants offer a glimpse into the massive efforts around the state to bring about transformation, and our grant review process offers everyone insight into this important work. Don't forget to let us know if you would like to help review grants. The Making Change Happen profile showcases Cathy Plourde of Add Verb Production whose creative voice moves social issues into the public discourse in a provocative way. On March 9th in Portland, we'll revisit the Women's Leadership Series: Doing Well by Being Well and examine the transformational capabilities of leadership. Finally, on March 17th, Masey Kaplan will present Close Buy Catalog at the Women Standing Together lunch, giving us insight into a new way to buy local.
I'm feeling calmer already. How about you?
Regards,
Eli

Making Change Happen
|
Cathy Plourde, Add Verb Productions: Do-It-Yourself Change
Part of "Making Change Happen: Women Creating a Better Maine"
Written by Erika Blauch
The lone young woman has captured the attention of the teenagers who have come to watch her perform. They are rapt as she seamlessly transforms from Ellen, to Ellen's mother, to Cindy, Ellen's friend, to The Voice of Ellen's Eating Disorder. Each of the voices tells them in a distinct way about the pain of Ellen's struggle with anorexia. Near the end of the performance, Ellen looks out at the audience, which is clearly visible under the house lights. "What are you going to do?" she asks everyone. Full profile >>>
