Greetings!
I am ready for the New Year. Are you? Sure, I'm ready to leave behind the worst economic climate since the Great Depression. But what I'm really ready for is the year, or years, that lie ahead and what we'll see from women. The prediction is that the next year, and following decade, is going to be full of innovation. And thankfully so because our society is in dire need of innovation. We need jobs that are forward thinking. We need industry that considers social and environmental ramifications. We need equality in our personal, civic and professional lives. We need health care that serves the public good. We need public discourse that is diverse not divisive.

And we need women to make it so. I hope you'll join the Maine Women's Fund community as we continue to support each other in our efforts to make Maine a better place. There is much ahead of us in 2010 - more from the Women's Leadership Series, including a discussion this month about the unique traits of feminine leadership; a March discussion about sustaining ourselves; and a conversation in May about stepping into leadership positions with authority. In March, we'll break through the winter doldrums with the annual Spotlight on Philanthropy and a pilot program for girls and grantmaking; we will also announce our next round of grantmaking for the Economic Security Initiative. Later this spring, we'll come together in our annual celebration to honor Maine Women and Girls.

I hope you'll join us. Happy New Year to all!

Written by Kelsey Abbott

"It's never too late to change your life and turn things around for yourself, your community and your family," says Wendy Rose, the senior micro-enterprise coordinator at the Maine Centers for Women, Work and Community (WWC). She should know. Rose and the rest of the staff at WWC have helped women in many different stages of life learn how to manage their finances, gain leadership skills, find the right careers and build their own businesses. WLSWomen's Leadership Series: The Difference Found in Women's Leadership
Join us to discuss the "difference" found in women's leadership. There is much research that invites businesses to acknowledge and optimize gender differences as a means to improve business performance. Yet there continues to be the practice of "neutralizing gender," reinforcing the belief that leadership has nothing to do with gender. Join us, bring your friends and colleagues. These brown bag lunch events are free and open to the public. RSVP to thewomen@mainewomensfund.org or 207-774-5513.

GGIGirl's Grantmaking Initiative
Hey Girls! The Maine Women's Fund and the National Girls Collaborative want YOU to help us give away $25,000 in grant money to help get more girls interested and active in science, technology, engineering, and math jobs and hobbies.

If you're a girl in 8th-12th grade interested in helping grow programs that serve girls, we want you to apply to be on the girls' grantmaking team!

All girls who are chosen will participate in designing and putting into action a process to grant money to girls' programs. If you're interested, pencil in the afternoon of March 6th to join us at Bowdoin College from 1-5pm where the girls' grantmaking team will decide how and where to give $25,000 in grant dollars.
