| Greetings! |
While these rainy days may be blighting your beach plans, it is an excellent opportunity to catch up on Maine Women's Fund reading! July is a rather excellent month for news. We've just announced our 2008/2009 grant partners and we have another exciting story of impact and social change from the Cobscook Community Center - a grantee partner from Washington County. We take great pride in our grantmaking process, described on E-Quality Matters, which is demonstrative of both the rigor and humanity required in philanthropy. Join us in celebrating these strong organizations who are contributing to the greatness of Maine. Now, pour yourself a cup of hot tea, and settle in for some good news. Happy summer, Eli |

Making Change Happen |
Charley Martin-Berry: This Is What Empowerment Looks Like Written by Kelsey Abbott Charley Martin-Berry says she "totally" loves being a woman-and that just might be the secret to her success. As director of the Cobscook Community Learning Center's Passages program, Martin-Berry coordinates a self-paced high school diploma program for pregnant and parenting teens, and even teaches five students herself. "I care deeply about creating a world in which women back each other up," she says. Learn more about how Cobscook Community Learning Center's Passages program is making change happen. |
| New Girls' Network Registration |
Registration is open for the next New Girls' Network session, which begins September 2009 in Augusta, Bangor, Lewiston/Auburn, Midcoast and Portland. Register today!
The New Girls' Network is a leadership community that gives women in their 20s and 30s a chance to build their networks, explore social change and unleash their leadership potential. At the Maine Women's Fund, we believe that in order to develop ourselves as authentic leaders and differentiate ourselves from the "old boys' network," young women must commit to an ongoing practice. As such, the New Girls' Network acts as a catalyst, bringing women together for a ten-month exploration of philanthropy, activism and feminism through stories, reflections and dialogue. Maine Women's Fund Grant Announcement |
The Maine Women's Fund awarded nearly $80,000 in social change grants to nine organizations in Maine promoting lasting social change in Maine.
Through our grant-making, we build economic independence for women and girls and foster economic development by:
- Providing opportunities for women and girls to increase their financial literacy and learn the importance of asset building.
- Pushing for changes in public policy that will bolster women's wages and increase their access to education, health care and benefits.
- Helping girls obtain the education they need to avoid poverty and abuse.
- Teaching women how to find better jobs and negotiate better wages.

The Cumberland County Community Development Office is looking for women living alone or with roommates in the Portland area to participate in a study of their housing needs and preferences.
