Greetings!
I love making new friends through philanthropy. This seems especially pertinent this month as the 2008/2009 New Girls' Network session ends. I know from the 300+ women who have completed the program that it presents an opportunity to connect and stay connected around shared values. We come from different places (economically, socially, politically and professionally) and have different perspectives, but we are the same in that we are agents of change for women and girls in Maine. As part of the broader Maine Women's Fund community, we put our values to work through philanthropy by investing in organizations like the Maine Women's Policy Center, a grant and strategic partner, in our efforts to create long lasting change for women and girls in Maine. This month the Making Change Happen profile is the first of a series of profiles that feature grant partners and highlight how our philanthropy is making a difference. I hope you will find a bit of inspiration and take some pride in what you are helping to accomplish.

Happy June,
Eli

Making Change Happen
Sarah Standiford and the Maine Women's Policy Center: Working Toward Prosperity for All
Written by Jessica Thomas

Sarah Standiford is changing Maine. As executive director of the Maine Women's Policy Center and its sister organization, the Maine Women's Lobby, Standiford and her staff work tirelessly to make life better for women and girls statewide. They employ a twofold approach: enacting ground-breaking public policy to improve women's lives, and empowering women to create change in their own communities. "We don't simply advocate for women and girls. We also teach them to advocate for themselves through local and legislative action," explains Standiford. Read more about how the Maine Women's Policy Center is working toward prosperity for all.
New Girls' Network Registration

Registration is open for the next New Girls' Network session, which begins September 2009 in Augusta, Bangor, Lewiston/Auburn, Midcoast and Portland. Register today!

The New Girls' Network is a leadership community that gives women in their 20s and 30s a chance to build their networks, explore social change and unleash their leadership potential. At the Maine Women's Fund, we believe that in order to develop ourselves as authentic leaders and differentiate ourselves from the "old boys' network," young women must commit to an ongoing practice. As such, the New Girls' Network acts as a catalyst, bringing women together for a ten-month exploration of philanthropy, activism and feminism through stories, reflections and dialogue.
