Greetings!

The Maine Women's Fund invites you to come celebrate - 20 years of creating lasting change, 20 years of investing in women and girls, and 20  years of building women's leadership. As we gather at our Anniversary Weekend Celebration May 1-3, I hope that you will join me in thanking our Founding Mothers. They envisioned the long-term independence and sustainability of the organization and built an endowment to ensure it. They defined a mission and core beliefs that have not wavered in twenty years. In doing so, they created an organization that depended on shared values to organize women and action and invested in the power of women's cooperation. Many women have carried the organization forward in these twenty years - board chairs, executive directors, donors and volunteers. These are our stewards who have navigated the changing economic and political climates. These are the women who refused to give up and who have championed twenty years of progress and social change. Join us in thanking these women, and all women who champion our values in their families and workplaces every day and who work tirelessly to expand our resources and programming.

We look forward to seeing you in May,
Eli

Dawn CarriganDawn Carrigan:
Advocating for Kids and Creating Community
Written by Michaela Cavallaro

Dawn Carrigan always knew she wanted to be a teacher. And she stuck with her dream even as she entered college during a period when pursuing an education degree was discouraged, due to a glut of recent education grads and a dearth of teaching positions. But Carrigan didn't charge ahead naively; instead, she decided to pursue a degree in special education, figuring that the specialized training would improve her chances of finding a job upon graduation. And she was right: After graduating from the University of Southern Maine, she was hired by the Bangor schools to teach a self-contained classroom of emotionally disturbed children from kindergarten through second grade. ShalomShalom Odokara: Paying it Forward
Written by Bethany Hutchinson

Shalom Odokara doesn't see herself as a leader. "I'm just Shalom," she says. With humility and quiet confidence, Odokara describes her role as founder and director of Women in Need Industries (WINI), a resource hub for women seeking to better their lives and the lives of their families. Because these women face difficult hurdles-financial distress, language and cultural barriers, domestic violence, and drug addiction-Odokara often works seven days a week, including Christmas and New Year's. She knows that those who contact WINI can feel particularly vulnerable during the holidays and says, "If it were me making that call on Christmas Day, I would want someone to answer." In today's society so many girls and young women struggle with the issue of body image, an issue that is compounded by the female stereotypes enforced by commercial sources. The goal of Embracing Beauty is to offer girls and young women ages 8 to 18 the opportunity to re-think their concept of beauty and become more comfortable with their own self-image. Naya's Trance Belly Dance in conjunction with several of Southern Maine's most proficient Middle Eastern dance instructors has developed a series of workshops and guided activities that use the empowering art of belly dance to encourage girls and young women to embrace their individual beauty, increase self-acceptance and promote a healthy body image. More information can be found online or by e-mailing Kimberly at kalyani@nayastrance.com.
