Greetings!

There are a number of things that I can dork out to. There is the US Constitution, network theory, Facebook, and highest on the list is Philanthropy, which is why I am so giddy it is February. This month, the Maine Women's Fund community is talking about philanthropy -- from the New Girls Network site visits to the February 28th Annual Spotlight on Philanthropy. So, in the spirit of Facebook chain letters, I invite you to read my blog of 25 Random Things that inspire me about philanthropy. What inspires you?

Thanks,
Eli

Women Creating a Better Maine

Miranda Donovan: Taking Every Opportunity
Written by Nicole Ouellette

In 2007, Miranda Donovan attended Maine Youth in Government, a mock legislative experience for high school students. As part of the three-day-long program, attendees draft legislation on a topic they think is important to Maine residents. Inspired by the memory of two close friends who had died in a car accident, Donovan chose traffic safety. She drafted a bill that proposed a traffic safety study on the Route 11 corridor, an Aroostook County road that is heavily traveled by logging trucks. Her fellow attendees--150 students from across the state-voted it the best bill of the session. Ask Donovan about the honor, however, and she shrugs it off. "I do Model State just for fun," she says. Barbara Babkirk: Religion, Feminism and Meaningful Work
Written by Janice Rogers Barbara Babkirk

Barbara Babkirk began her feminist journey with the Ursuline Sisters at Mount Merici Academy, a parochial school for girls in Waterville, Maine. While attending the school from kindergarten through high school, she found two Roman Catholic nuns who took her under their wing. "They showered me with love and kindness, and expected only wonderful things of me," she says, "and they helped me to see that there was more to life than what was in front of me." What's more, periodically throughout Babkirk's life, religion and spirituality would open her eyes to the empowerment of women. Read Barbara's full profile
