Volume: 2 Issue: #6 July/2009
Greetings!

I hope you had a wonderful 4th of July holiday.  Mine was bittersweet.  My 94 year old grandmother passed away at 12:15 am on July 5th.  She had lived an incredible life and was always full of stories and tales from "the old days."  However, the last nine years of her life were spent in a nursing home suffering from the horrible effects of Alzheimer's Disease.

Although those nine years are part of her 94 years on this earth, we don't really consider them as part of her Legacy, because she wasn't mentally with us.

What we do consider her legacy is the fun times we had at her house on weekends, holidays and vacations during the summer.  A Sunday lunch table full of meat loaf, fried chicken, mashed potatoes and banana pudding.(my personal favorite and she always had a little bowl just for me) Working hard in the garden and tobacco fields and making everyone who stopped by feel like a special guest in her home.

As I was thinking about my grandmother's legacy, I began to think about my legacy and the legacy of my business.  My deepest desire is that my legacy will be one of always serving others.  Being helpful and providing information that can help someone else succeed.

With the emergence of social media you have a great opportunity to begin your online legacy.  What will your's be?

My grandmother's is legacy is our precious memories, 4 children, 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 23 great great grandchildren.

Building Your Online Legacy

Social Networking has opened so many doors to business owners that wouldn't ordinarily have been opened.  Through sites like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn you can be connected to people that would not otherwise open their door to you.

So how are you using these tremendous tools to build your business and your online legacy?  What do you share online?  Do you use it strictly for personal reasons or are you building a strong business too?

Here are some ideas for building a long and lasting Online Legacy

  • Be Honest - Don't tell little white lies or even big fat lies on the social sites.  Your comments should always as true and factual as possible.
  • Be Courteous - Words are very often misunderstood, especially online.  Be careful when commenting on posts that your tone doesn't come across as mean or hurtful or even rude.
  • Be Active - So many times people will establish a presence on social media sites and never come back.  I have a friend that I posted a birthday greeting on their page in 2008 and I went back last month to wish them another one and there had been no activity since my last post!  Communicate with your friends.  When they leave a comment on your sites, comment back.
  • Have Fun - Even if you are building your online business presence, you can have fun.  Tell a funny (clean) joke or share a funny story.  Everyone needs a good laugh
  • Be Helpful - It is so easy to share information through social networking.  When you come across a great blog post or article online, share it with your online friends.  They might be looking for the exact same information.
Building your Online Legacy is really not that difficult.  These are just a few ways to help you get started on the right path to making your legacy online one people remember.
