Issue #2 |
|
Greetings!
I watched two days of Barratt-Jackson on TV and didn't see any grand theft auto. Did you? In this issue we continue our take on a recent Wall
Street Journal article concerning "celebrity" collectible cars. This
is our final poke at that article.
Just in case I am not the last person on earth to have
discovered the online magazine www.VeloceToday.com,
please check it out. I really enjoyed it. On January 24th, Peter Elsworth of
The Providence Journal published a brilliant story about MMR
and we have saved it for your reading pleasure. Writer Peter Elsworth
and photographer Steve Szydlowski work for one of the few, if not the
only, newspaper in the Northeast that still publishes motorsports
articles and
not solely new car reviews. Go Projo! You can view our story at
www.projo.com.
Fewer than 60 days before the Amelia Island Concours
d'Elegance, March 13-15,2009, so we have a story about that also.
Thanks for the kind comments about our first effort. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Collectible Cars in for Rough Ride (part 2) Are you somebody?
In 1965, when I was 21, I bought a 1959 Porsche coupe
that was as mechanically crippled as it was attractive. It had issues: Under acceleration it tended
wander across its own and nearby lanes.
It stopped with a series of neck
snapping lurches as each wheel locked up
and released in spastic unpredictable sequence.
Further, it was incapable of supplying even a hint of warm air through
its floor vents. This last would prove to be the key to its eventual demise. (read more...) |

MMR Member Story | Amelia
Island vs. Pebble Beach
|
Each month we feature a story by a member of the MMR
community. This story is about the 2008 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance.
Pebble Beach Concours was the previous August and both were fresh in my mind
when I wrote this piece. If you were just considering Amelia and have
never been there, this story might help. Please remember Amelia is March
15-17, 2009.
Apples and Oranges
Word on the street is that the Amelia Island Concours
d'Elegance is better than Pebble Beach.
Don't you believe it.
The Pebble Beach setting alone could be worth the trip. After all, this is the famous 18th hole where many a
golfing great strutted to his second shot after bringing his tee shot back to
the fairway from a trip over the ocean. And far more were just happy to be
sixty yards back and safe. (read more) |

| MMR's Pick for "Worth a Look" Site
|
MMR has visited well over a thousand sites to select
those chosen for our Resource Directory. From time to time we will introduce
you to one site that has struck us as a cut above. This month we encourage you to visit Art.
Engine, David Wiener's Ferrari branded stereo system. You may have seen them because David has
exhibited these limited production products at several prestigious automotive
events.
In a product category where design and performance are
equally crucial to success, Ferrari have their brand on the right horse. Take a look at this site then start looking for a vacant spot in your den or garage.

hand-made Sheepskin shoes are light and very comfortable. A little like wearing
gloves on your feet. You'll look very cool and your tootsies will thank you.

A Car with a Story:
Al Unser Jr's Indy 500E
|
In 1994 Al Unser Jr. won the Indianapolis 500 driving a
Penske PC-23 powered by a controversial Mercedes-Benz engine. The rules allowed
greater displacement for pushrod (OHV) production based engines over the more
common used purpose built race engines with overhead cam (OHC) design. Mercedes
secretly developed a racing pushrod engine to take advantage of the loophole
and gave it to the Penske Team, fully realizing that the engine would be banned
if they won. On lap 184 of 200, Emerson Fittipaldi, driving a Penske Mercedes,
was leading the race and lapping his teammate in second place when the
turbulence from Al Unser's car upset Fittipaldi's PC-23 and caused him to
crash. Al Unser went on to win and the rules were immediately changed to
eliminate the engine advantage. Mercedes Benz presented Al Unser with this 500E
to commemorate his victory. Hatch and Sons have all the documentation to
support the above, including a poster that Mercedes had made up in advance of
the race announcing the victory.
The 500E was a collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and
Porsche, who developed the drivetrain. The list price of a 500E was over
$80,000 in 1994 and reflected the outstanding performance and excellent build
quality of this rare vehicle.
Only 374 were brought into the US. Only one in the world
was Al Unser's Indy 500E.
You can be the second owner of this almost new, 8K mile
Spruce Green Metallic and Crème Beige leather interior, piece of Indy racing
history. Books, manuals, tools, are all in an unopened bag. This is a
virtually new car with an incredible story.
