Friends of Fred Old School Wine Club Shipment

Winter 2011

Shipment #1

Dear Friend of Fred,

The Winter months are upon us here in the Dry Creek Valley. Long periods of rain have been followed by many days of sunshine, and it's a little scary that it feels like Spring is right around the corner. We hope all of you in areas with more extreme conditions are safe, and have plenty of wine to help you ride out the storms; Dry Creek Valley is not a bad place to get away to if you need to escape more severe Winter weather. The grapevines are all dormant, and the 2010 wines are slowly developing in barrel. We will start bottling some of the 2009 red wines next week as well (which are tasting fantastic).

The next shipment of wines will be shipping out on February 21st, and we ask that you please notify us of any information changes by Friday, February 11th, so we can get your wines to you in a timely fashion. During the Winter, we realize some of you may live in areas with freezing conditions, and ask that you contact us if you will not be present to receive your wine the week of the 21st or if you are concerned about your wine. We are happy ot hold onto it until the weather improves.

We are offering to "Double Your Shipment" for the same shipping cost as the regular three bottles, at the bottom of the email. Read more about the wines below, and we'll look forward to hearing from you, or seeing you soon.

If any of you are looking for a reason to come visit, or will be in the area, mark your calendar for Saturday May 21st. Our friend, Chef Extraordinaire (and catcher for the Peterson Winery softball team...) Dan Lucia of DL Catering will once again be firing up the grill for our annual Friends of Fred Wine Club Luncheon. RSVP quickly, as space is limited to 60 people! $25/person for wine club members. Saturday, May 21st, Noon-4pm.

We will also be holding a Pickup Party on Saturday, February 19th.

cab label       2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, Bradford Mountain Vineyard

Tasting Notes:
The last vintage before we took out the vines to replant, the 2006 vintage displays all the characteristics we love about the Bradford Mountain Vineyard.

Aromatics of freshly crushed blackberries mingle with dark currants against a cedar and mineral essence backdrop. Characteristics found in the nose are mirrored in the flavors along with hints of spice and cocoa. As the wine opens, the lush mouthfeel reveals a firm structure of softening tannins, fine acidity and well-integrated oak. The Bradford Mountain terroir lends finesse and the signature minerality to this Cabernet, creating a wine with elegance and power-a rare combination.

We will not have another Cabernet Sauvignon from the Mountain until a small quantity of 2009 vintage is released late 2012. Also available in 1.5L magnums!

Trad Label2008 Zinfandel, Tradizionale, Dry Creek Valley

Tasting Notes:
This is the kind of Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel we really enjoy. A traditional, old-vine field-blend, this wine is the classic "raspberry jam" that differentiates the best Dry Creek Valley Zins from all others.

Big, but balanced. Fruity, yet elegant.

This is a wine that will go with almost any food, but you can also just pull the cork on a bottle and drink it with friends while playing cards or watching a good movie.

The old-vine West Vineyard Zinfandel in this wine was planted in the 1920s during Prohibition. It contains about 3% other red grapes (Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouschet, Carignane and some others we're not really sure about) as well as 1% white grapes (Semillon, Palomino and Chasselas). All the vines are harvested at the same time and all the various varieties are cofermented, which produces a smoother, fuller wine than separate fermentations and subsequent blending can give you.

Dry Creek Sangio
        2008 Sangiovese, Dry Creek Valley

Tasting Notes:

This 100% Sangiovese was produced from fruit grown at Teldeschi Vineyards, a renowned vineyard in Dry Creek Valley, which is next door to our winery on the Dry Creek bench.

This classic Sangiovese offers rustic aromas layered with mineral notes and toasty oak. Spicy subdued fruit intertwines with an earthy and mineral essence, adding a layer of interest to the wine. Hints of mocha, leather and cranberry mingle with gentle oak notes.

The chewy tannins, nice acidity and medium body make this an ideal wine to pair with meals or hearty appetizers. Try it with heirloom tomato bruschetta, baba ganoush with pita bread, arugula pesto over fresh fettuccine, or a wild game roast.
