We've all heard taking a multi-vitamin is a good idea right?  What kind of vitamin is best? Did you know that many of the most advertised national brands are synthetic?  Meaning the vitamin was synthesized in a laboratory and not derived directly from food. Synthetic vitamins don't absorb as well, in fact only 30% absorption of some vitamins in many cases. So what does that mean? You aren't getting as much of the benefit from that type vitamin as you would from a natural vitamin. Natural food based vitamins are more readily recognized by the body and are absorbed much better.  So you are getting the full benefits.

Should you take a multivitamin? Well, vitamins are involved in the millions and billions of metabolic processes that take place in our body on a daily basis. Vitamins and minerals are cofactors in the reactions that allow us to utilize carbs as energy, digest food, etc etc. 

Vitamin deficiencies may take years to fully be recognized. If you are getting the RDA is that enough? It may not be. The RDA was not established for optimal health, it was established to prevent illness. If you have a deficiency, your body may not be operating at peak efficiency. The more active you are the more important a good multi-vitamin may be in your arsenal.  As with most nutrition, the more active you are the more you need.  Athletes have a higher need than sedentary individuals.  The B complex is a good example of a vitamin that the need increases with increased activity.

But too much isn't good either.  The megadoses you see in some brands are using the philosophy that "if some is good, then more is better".  Not true. Once our bodily needs are met we expell what we don't need. Look at vitamins as spark plugs. They help metabolic reactions take place and they can be recycled. They don't disappear after the first cycle. They are involved in many reactions, and continue to be, so it isn't better to have twice as much as you need. 

If you are looking for a good food based vitamin we have a nice selection for men and women. A good multivitamin doesn't have to cost a lot either.  If you aren't using one, it's probably a good idea to add one. Even the American Medical Association has agreed that it is probably a good idea since it's hard to get everything in our diet. 

I have a lot of people tell me they can feel a boost from our vitamins. That's a good sign. If you are wondering about it, drop in and we'll go over your options.

 Are whole grains sabotaging your weight loss program?

 

You've heard it before... "eat plenty of whole grains".  Actually whole grains are a big part of the Food pyramid. They are supposed to be healthy right?

 

But just because it says "whole grain" on the package doesn't mean it's a great thing to be eating if you are concerned with losing body fat. Let me explain.

 

We gain body fat when we continually spike our blood sugar levels and our bodies are forced to secrete insulin to reduce the blood sugar levels and as a result we store body fat.

 

Certain things will tend to spike our blood sugar more than others.  Sugar is one of them. Sugar has a glycemic index of 100 (the highest). The higher the number the more of a blood sugar spike we can expect which isn't good for losing fat.

 

Here are some examples. Remember the higher the number the worse the blood sugar spike.

 

Whole grain bread (generic) - 51

Whole barley kernel bread - 55

Cracked wheat kernel bread - 58

Whole rye kernel bread - 66

Oat bran bread - 68

 Potato chips - 54 

Corn chips - 63 

Snickers candy bar - 55
Coca Cola - 55

Ice cream - 65

 

Isn't that odd? Some of the candy snacks are about the same glycemic index as the so called "healthy" breads. Beware of processed foods when trying to lose body fat. If you would like more information on this, come see us and ask about the 20% rule. You can judge processed foods based on this rule.

Chromium is a key nutrient in preventing insulin resistance and may help give you the edge in your battle to take off those extra pounds of fat.

 

Overweight people can experience insulin impairment that prevents the proper metabolism of carbohydrates.  Excessive blood glucose is converted into body fat if insulin is not able to drive the sugars into muscle cells.

 

Many things affect our bodies chromium levels. One study showed up to 90% of us are not getting enough chromium in our diets.  If you are taking an antacid it can prevent chromium absorption. As you get older it gets tougher to retain chromium. 

 

Why not try 200mcg with each meal, not to exceed 3 times per day.  There are multiple studies that show this can help reduce fat and even increase lean mass.

Leptin - What is it and why it can be harmful to your health and what you can do about it?

Leptin is a protein hormone that is thought to relay satiety signals. ie: Let us know we are full or hungry. Leptin concentrations are highly correlated to body fat mass.
 
Obese humans have, on average, 4 times more serum leptin levels than lean individuals.

Men who are obese, (with high serum concentrations of leptin) have been shown to have low concentrations of total and free testosterone. (ie: 22%-45%)

This can have many other health implications beyond vanity.  Excess body fat around the middle has been associated with many health problems. If you find yourself with the "tire around the middle" syndrome, you may benefit by adding a natural testosterone booster to your exercise and nutritional strategy.
