Ed Castillo - Local man wins 3rd in his first Body Building show at the Bluffs Classic - IFPA Men's PRO Masters Body Building Show!!!  Ed started using Max products including Quadra Cuts Competition, Max Pro, and EnduroMax. He recently added FBX and XTR to his stack. He works out at Ultimate Fitness in Bettendorf, IA. He has plans to continue competing in All Natural competitions coming up soon.  Wow Ed, great progress.  milk  MILK the best option?
 
 
Is chocolate milk the best option after a tough workout?  You've heard this before right?  Well, if I had a choice between a glass of water and a glass of chocolate milk I'd go for the milk.  But the better choice would be a clean whey isolate or isolate/concentrate blend and possibly some carbohydrates.   Why not the milk option?
 
8oz of milk contains approximately 8grams of protein.  it also contains a fair amount of lactose (milk sugar) and an 8oz. glass of 2% milk contains about 250 calories. 
 
For a male who weighs approximately 180lbs and is pretty lean we would recommend 1gram of protein per pound of body weight.  He could eat or drink this every 3 to 4 hours throughout the day (6 meals or snacks) which would equate to 30grams per serving.
 
Going back to our milk example, this would mean he needed approximately 4 glasses of milk to equal the proper protein to optimize muscle mass.  That means he would need to drink 1 quart of milk.  Good luck digesting all that lactose...and that is close to 1000 calories.

Why is this such a good combination of proteins?

Don't take supplements that may cause you harm to you over the long term.  Protect your liver.  Why sacrifice your health for a short term gain?

I want to point out some potentially harmful ingredients that have been showing up in supplemenents recently.  At a minimum, these substances may be harmful to your liver, causing inflammation and damage.  Our liver is somewhat like an oil filter and cleans and removes toxins from our blood stream.  Without a proper functioning liver we are in big trouble and would quickly become toxic and die.

WADA - World Anti-Doping Association has added the following substance to the list for 2010.  Other major athletic organizations such as the NCAA usually mimic whatever the WADA does in their banned lists.  So, taking the following substance would disqualify competitors for the Olympics, Tour De France and many other athletic organizations.  
 
 ***methylhexaneamine was added in 2010. 
 
Other names for this substance would include:
 (geranamine)
 (1,3-dimethylamylamine)
(4-methylhexan-2-amine)
 (Geranium Extract) 
Taking this substance may trigger a positive for amphetamines in drug tests.

Also the FDA has been cracking down on ANABOLIC substances over the past year or so.  Many recalls have been taking place with "synthetic" type anabolic optimizers.  Reasons sited for the ban include shrinkage of the testicles, decreased sperm count, and sterility.  Also anabolic steroid use can damage the liver and can cause high cholesterol levels which may increase the risk of strokes and heart attacks.   Ubrupt termination of long term use may cause severe depression.  
 
There are still some companies that continue to restructure a few molecules and say these products are not on the banned list.  These  "designer steroids" and can be purchased across the counter in some areas.  The FDA is working to clean up and eliminate these type products. 
 
Unfortunately, by not complying in spirit and in actions to these new laws as they are enacted, it gives the whole supplement industry a bad name. 
Many of the previously available products are now a schedule III felony to possess.  Heavy fines and prison terms are in place for these products.  Most of these chemicals are being imported from China.
 
My message.  "If it is banned, don't mess with it."  
 
 
Here are a couple of chemical structures (or designer steroids) I've seen in our market area recently that you should be aware of.
 
 
 Here are a couple right out of the WADA list.

methandriol; methasterone

  
(2α, 17α-dimethyl-5α-androstane-3-one-17β-ol)
 
boldenone; boldione -- this is an official schedule III drug
            (androsta-1, 4-diene-3, 17-dione)
 
These are also listed on the WADA list under Anabolic Androgenic Steroids.
 
Sometimes these strings are scrambled up on the label.

The QC Fitness Fest will test overall strength and endurance in a timed circuit event that will be sure to challenge any fitness level.
This event is being promoted to help people get in shape and have fun doing it.  Individuals and teams of 4 are welcome. There will be prizes for 4 person, men, women, coed (2men/2women), and individual participants.

Get your friends to join and have bragging rights...
BE "THE FITTEST" TEAM in the Quad Cities. 

Gyms and health clubs are encouraged to bring your best athletes out for this event.  EVERYONE IS WELCOME.

You must preregister for the event so proper planning can take place.

What exactly is this event???? 
 
SLED PULL
- Individuals will pull a weighted sled 80'. The weight will vary for different age, gender and weight classes.

REVERSE PULL-UP - Contestants will have to perform 10 reverse style pull-ups where they will be graded by station monitor. This event will be timed.

WATER BALL TOSS - Contestants will throw a water ball overhead and behind them to a pre determined destination. This event will be timed.

PUSH UPS- Contestants will have to perform 25 push-ups using a push-up counting device. This event will be timed

SIT UPS - contestants will have to perform 50 sit-ups. Contestants will be provided an assistant to hold down feet. This event will be timed.

FARMERS WALK - Contestants will have to carry dumbbells to a pre-determined destination. The weight will vary for differ-ent age, gender and weight classes. This event will be timed.

1 MILE RUN - Contestants will finish the course with a 1 mile run. This event will be timed.

OPTIONAL EVENT-  BENCH PRESS YOUR BODY WEIGHT
If you sign up for the Fitness Fest you can also compete in this event for no additional charge.  How many times can you bench press your body weight?  If you can't compete in the Fitness Fest due to injuries but still want to compete in the bench press you will still need to fill out the registration form for the bench press only.
