Fostering the Future
The Adopt A Scholar program was created in 2007 to provide immediate financial relief to deserving medical students who face an overwhelming burden of educational debt. Stephanie DeFiores is one of ten students who received an Adopt A Scholar scholarship this year. Ms. DeFiores taught at P.S. 85 in the South Bronx for two years before she embarked on a career in medicine.
"More than half of my students had asthma, and they were out sick all the time," she said. "There were also some abuse cases going on. At a certain point I got really frustrated, because I felt that my students weren't getting the quality of health care that I received in Manhattan. So I decided to go back to school to study medicine because I want to help children living in underserved areas." Read more. |
