Greetings!
Welcome to the quarterly Plunge Update newsletter! These newsletters are designed to keep you up-to-date on Plunge happenings. You'll find information on scheduling your next Urban Plunge and suggestions on Fanning the Flame once your group returns home. In each newsletter, we'll also highlight one of the Plunge service sites and spotlight a youth group, congregation, school, scout troop, or community organization to share how they are living out the call of compassion and service in their own communities. |
| Service Site Highlight | | Delores Project
The Delores Project provides housing and case management services for single, un-accompanied women.
Delores, the inspiration for The Delores Project, was a woman who lived on the street for years. After she at last received housing, it was discovered that she had more than 50 people sleeping on the floor of her apartment each night. When Delores was asked who these people were, she said, "These are my friends." Delores lost her housing and finally died on the streets. The Delores Project was created for women just like Delores.
Volunteers assist with maintenance tasks and serve the evening meal to the women. This is a great opportunity to build relationships with women who are living on the margins. As one volunteer reflected, "I found hope in the extraordinary courage of the women at Delores Project. They all have such amazing stories!"
What was your favorite service site during your Plunge? E-mail Megham and it might just be the next Service Site Highlight! |
| Community Spotlight | |
Bethany Lutheran Church
Cherry Hills Village, CO
Pastoral Intern Jessica Daum wanted to give members of Bethany Lutheran Church the opportunity to connect with their community through service. What better time to get busy families to volunteer than on Sunday morning when they would otherwise be at church!
So, the worship services for May 22nd at Bethany have been cancelled! Jessica arranged with more than 30 organizations in the area to provide volunteer projects for the families and individuals from Bethany to take part in. Even though the event is still over a month away, more than 200 people have already signed up and committed to go out and Be the Blessing on May 22nd!
How has your youth group, congregation, school, scout troop, or community organization carried the lessons and experiences they had on their Plunge back to your community? E-mail Megham to be the next Community Spotlight! |

Fanning the Flame:
Strategies for Keeping the Passion Alive | | Create a Booklet of Volunteer Opportunities in Your CommunityHave youth research organizations addressing social isssues in your community. Find out about their volunteer policies and needs. Create a booklet (or an online database) that youth and families can search when looking for a project. Information you'll probably want to ask about: - Group size limits (minimum and maximum) - Schedule (days/times volunteers can come) - Typical Projects - Special Skills Required - Age requirements - Volunteer Coordinator's name, phone number, and e-mail address Now, go out and volunteer! Organizations need your help! Maybe you'll find an organization that you love and want to volunteer with more often! Remember, skills learned while volunteering can be included on your resume! Share your volunteer experiences with us! |
| Schedule Update | | Schedule your Plunge today!Summer 2011 is FULL!!! Thanks to everyone who scheduled a Plunge! Now is a great time to start scheduling your Fall Break Plunge or a weekend Plunge to kick-off the new school year! *We also schedule single-day or single-session events such as the Game of Life, a Previously Homeless Speaker, or a single-day service activity. Call Megham for details 303.350.5062*
When asked what he would tell others about the Urban Plunge, Joel, 21 (University of St. Thomas) wrote, "It's awesome and can really and truly open up your eyes to what is going on in our world." |
