CAREY'S CONVERSATIONS

"Atque in perpetuum, frater, ave atque vale.

And so, my brother, hail, and farewell."

Catullus c.84-54BC Carmina

It is with mixed feelings that I have agreed to accept Michael's resignation as St. Luke's Organist/Choirmaster. Michael has served faithfully these five years working with our musicians in the choir and handbell ringers, as parish administrator and even did a stint as the 'janitor' for a brief period. Upon our arrival he was invaluable as he helped Joanna and I as we were finding our sea legs. He has been a delight to work with and has been a real asset. I truly believe Michael is going on to bigger and better things and St. Stephen's Seattle will be blessed to have you Michael, you will be sorely missed by all of us here.

His last Sunday with us will be next Sunday, the 23rd of September.

Word travels quickly and I already have been given a couple of names of individuals who have an interest in filling in during the interim period. In the short term I will make sure that we have Sunday coverage after Michael departs. In the longer-term task of finding Michael's successor I should like to form a committee that will assist me. Some of you will be hearing form me in the days ahead about serving in this capacity. We will be conducting a regional search in order to find the right person for the job and I ask your prayers as we seek God's person.

The following prayer is offered for Michael as he makes this exciting transition into a new phase in his life and ministry:

Gracious God, we thank you for the work and witness of your servant Michael who has enriched this community and brought gladness to friends; now bless and preserve him at this time of transition. Guide him in the continued use of your gifts. Give him sustenance

for temporal and spiritual needs, friends to cheer his way, and a clear vision of the ministry to which you are now calling him. By your Holy Spirit be present in his

pilgrimage, that he may travel with the One who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

DEACON'S BENCH

Christian Education classes for Sunday September 16 at St. Luke's

In the adult formation this Sunday September 16, we will be hearing a message from Parker Palmer. Parker Palmer is a Quaker author, educator, and activist who focuses on issues in education, community, leadership, spirituality and social change. Two of his books which have been life changing for me are Let Your Life Speak: Listening for the Voice of Vocation and The Promise of Paradox: A Celebration of Contradictions in the Christian Life. Sherry Furr will facilitate the discussion after hearing Parker Palmer speak.

The senior high youth will be learning about their spiritual gifts from Sandy Smith from Christ Church.

The junior high with Beth Maze will begin a study of the last supper and the origin of the Eucharist.

Level 1 and Level 2 Catechesis classes will be learning about the atrium and the prayer table.

A great Sunday at St. Luke's planned!

Joanna

FROM THE ORGAN BENCH

Dear friends of St. Luke's,

I wanted to tell you all that I will be leaving you soon as I have accepted a position at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Seattle.

When I came to St. Luke's 5 years ago, I was in the middle of a spiritual crisis. Over the course of the last few weeks, the readings at our Sunday liturgies dealt a lot with hospitality. Having said that, the wonderful congregation at St. Luke's took me under their collective wing and helped me to, not only heal but re-connect with God.

You took me into your homes and made me feel part of your families. We have shared many things since I have been here. During my time here, we have been through a lot and I am so very happy that Fr. Carey and Deacon Joanna are here to lead this parish.

As I made my announcement this past Sunday morning, I was a little overwhelmed when I looked out at the congregation. I saw children that I remember being born, now able to walk and talk. I remembered people who were so very supportive of my ministry, in the pews and those who have entered God's blessed kingdom ahead of us.

I thank each of you for allowing me to share my journey, my life and my music with you.

God bless you all.

Michael

THE BELL TREE

This week the handbell musicians were commissioned. All three groups are working on music that you will hear in October.

The North Little Rock Ringers of First Assembly of God Church continue to use our facility and bells for practice as they grow into a ministry at their church. We are looking at some joint opportunities with them.

I will be out of town for two weeks. The Bell Tree will return the last week of September.

I have one space available in Chancel Ringers. Please see me if you are willing to give it a try.

Joy and Blessings

Debi

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

St. Francis House Ministries

Click of the MOUSE:  One of the easiest ways to help is to be a good Samaritan and donate money to St. Francis House ("SFH") is to use GoodSearch.com as you use your computer.  GoodSearch.com (powered by Yahoo) pays St. Francis House one cent every time you click on its site! Pennies add up, and the more you click and the more people are clicking, the more needy people can be helped through SFH!   See the "OUTREACH" table in the narthex this Sunday for details...

*DONATE sheets or blankets for the beds at St. Francis House...drop them off in the narthex or in the Parish Hall by the backdoor to the Nursery.

*VOLUNTEER:  Another way to help with time but not money, to volunteer to help at SFH or to help with the Vet's Dinners at St. Luke's on September 27th and December 6th.

*Adopting a family for the grocery ministry:  Thanks to a growing number of St. Luke's parishioners who have already volunteered, we only have two families left to be adopted!  These are families that need our help with groceries at the end of the month.  You may sign up to help as an individual or group of individuals to bring groceries on the FOURTH SUNDAY each month.  A suggested list of groceries and more details are in the narthex or contact Jeannie Fry at [email protected]

DAUGHTERS OF THE KING

This sentence appears in the DOK Prayer of the Order, "Pour out upon us the sevenfold gift of the Holy Spirit that we may always remember it is your work we are called upon to do, that all we think, do or say may be pleasing in your sight." St. Emma's Daughters want to use the gifts given to them to help you and serve our Lord. Do not wait to ask for help. Simply submit any prayer request on a DOK card found in the church pew rack; call the office for visitation needs (hospital or homebound); tell any Daughter of special needs; or let our President, Mary Ann Hodge, know and she can direct us in helping you. We keep your needs confidential, as desired.

"God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another... Do it with all strength and energy God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ." ~ 1 Peter 4:10, 11

AYE SEPTEMBER 28-30

AYE 2012 Registration is Online and Paperless

AYE (The Arkansas Youth Event) will be September 28th-30th. AYE is held annually at Camp Mitchell for 6th-12th grade youth. We sing, play, dance, and we always have some great Christian formation time.  The cost is $110 and scholarships are available at your local congregation or the diocese if needed, just contact your congregation and then the diocese.

At AYE we also elect our (DYC) Diocesan Youth Commission as well as our Diocesan Youth Delegates to Convention.  The DYC are youth in the 9th-12th grade who gather annually to plan and lead future events.  They are selected by being elected at AYE from their area of the state.  To be eligible to be elected you must turn in or bring with you this DYC covenant form.

The Diocesan Youth Delegates are full voice, vote and seat delegates to our annual convention which will be held in Little Rock, February 22nd-23rd.  Youth must be 16 and confirmed in an Episcopal Church in Arkansas.  Often youth must be able to leave school early on Friday as Convention will start by 5pm.

You can register and pay online if you like.  Also as a brand new service this year you can fill out your release form online after you have registered and sign it online. That's right we are paperless. To register just click here.

If you have any questions email Randall Curtis, Jr at [email protected].

AR EPISCOPAL CURSILLO

OCTOBER 25-28

What is Cursillo?  Cursillo is a movement of the church. Its purpose is to help those in the church understand their individual callings to be Christian Leaders.  This leadership may be exercised in work situations, in the family and social life, in leisure activities, and within the Church environment.  Leadership, in Cursillo, does not mean power over others, but influence on others; all of us need to be aware that we can exert a positive influence on those around us.  What is the goal of Cursillo?  The goal of Cursillo is the goal of the Church:  to bring all to Christ.  What does Cursillo do?  It helps to renew and deepen Christian commitment.  Cursillo is one of many renewal movements.  Many people have said Cursillo provides an important learning experience that causes them to feel like newly made Christians with a purpose and with support.  The next Cursillo will take place October 25-28 at Camp Mitchell.  The deadline for registration is October 10.  If this sounds like something you might be called to experience, please feel free to contact Shannon Stone, Deacon Joanna or Father Carey. Registration can be done through their website at

HAPPENING #28 NOVEMBER 9-11

What is Happening?

Happening is a renewal weekend for the young people of the Episcopal Church in the 10th -12th grade.  The weekend centers on the example and teachings of Jesus Christ, which are discussed in the atmosphere of joy and happiness, in a way that relates to the lives of today's young people. Small group discussions, large group activities, singing and drama fill the weekend, from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon.

Happening is "run" by and for teenagers.

They give the talks, lead discussions, lead singing and other activities.  Once a youth attends a Happening they can choose to be on "staff" for future Happenings.  They then meet together at "Pre-Hap" for an overnight to plan and prepare for the upcoming Happening.

The adults present serve as cooks, chaperones and support staff.  There is always at least one member of the clergy are on hand as Spiritual Directors.

It is important for all applicants to understand that Happening is centered on the Christian Tradition as expressed through the Baptismal Covenant.

Happening #28 will be Nov. 9th-11th at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Hot Springs, AR.
