CAREY'S CONVERSATIONS

"To the Celts, the mundane was the edge of glory."

Esther De Waal

I greatly appreciate the way in which the ancient Celts were able to integrate their spiritual and natural lives. They saw God as not being off in the distant cosmos but saw God in the events, places and people of their everyday lives. Their poems, prayers and songs reflect this deep spirituality that permeated day-to-day living. I believe we moderns who have our lives broken into so many compartments stand to learn a great deal from these ancient people. The following is an ancient example of what this spirituality looked like and will perhaps upon reflection provide us with some ideas of how our ordinary activities might be transformed into spiritual practice.

Bless to me, O God

Each thing mine eye sees;

Bless to me, O God,

Each sound mine ear hears;

Bless to me, O God,

Each odor that goes to my nostrils;

Bless to me, O God,

Each taste that goes to my lips,

Each note that goes to my song,

Each ray that guides my way,

Each thing I pursue,

Each lure that tempts my will,

the zeal that seeks my living soul,

The Three that seek my heart,

the zeal that seeks my living soul,

the Three that seek my heart.

From God Under My Roof: Celtic Songs and Blessings collected and edited by Esther De Waal

Yours in Christ,

Topics include life goals and accomplishments, the meaning of prayer, the problem of evil, and the role of faith in daily living. Each interview is about 25 minutes and will be followed by discussion led by a facilitator for the session.   Here is more detail about the speakers and facilitators for each session. FROM THE SENIOR WARDEN

The sign up list for Feast with Friends is in the Narthex. This is a great way to get to know new members on a personal level.   The monthly potluck gives you a chance to share a meal (and possibly a little wine) with your fellow church members and prospective members. You can sign up to host (host provides main course) or just attend and bring a dish. We will be beginning in September. It is a fun event and a great opportunity to get acquainted. Barbara and John Rhodes are heading it up so if you have questions please call them.

Our next major effort will be painting the outside of the Parish Hall. Ed Seward, our Junior Warden will be asking for volunteers as soon as the temperature drops so grab a paint brush and come join us.

Matt Muller, our church treasurer will be heading up the MAP effort beginning in September. This is our Mortgage Assistance Program (MAP) which is program in which you can make a pledge specifically to go to doing away with our mortgage. It currently is about $710,000. Our monthly payment is approximately $4,120. Please give this prayerful consideration and help out as much as you can.

We will be starting the planning soon for our budget for 2013 which will include a stewardship campaign.   Please prayerfully consider your own personal giving. We will also be asking all organizations to come up with a projected budget for 2013. We have some great things going on at St. Luke's and we need to be sure we keep it up.

Our Rally Day and Ministry Fair will be August 26. If you are new to our church this is an excellent opportunity to see what the various groups do and give you an opportunity to see where you might want to fit in.

On another note: Being a good neighbor is something I think we should all strive for and I would hope that we instill in our members at St. Luke's. Unfortunately not everyone outside our church shares that feeling. As many of you know Mary Ann has a florist and gift basket business. We recently had a fresh flower delivery to a home in a very nice neighborhood. If the person is not at home Mary Ann does not like to leave the flowers on their porch if it is hot (as it is now). She goes to a neighbor and if they are at home asks them if they will keep the flowers and give them to the person when they get home. This time she went to three houses all of which were at home and asked them if they would accept the flowers. All three refused. Excuses such as "I don't want to accept that responsibility", "I am really busy right now", "I'm not sure how long I will be here". She had to leave the flowers on the porch and hope that they survived. It was very disappointing. I hope we at St. Luke's strive to 'be a good neighbor" to our members and others outside our church.

Again, if you have questions that I can help with please call me. Thanks for listening.

Jerry Hodge

COMMUNITY OUTREACH FOR AUGUST

"ADOPT A FAMILY" GROCERY MINISTRY for ST. FRANCIS HOUSE

Many of us are already familiar with the Angel Trees at the mall; Christmas Trees that have "cut outs" of angels with the wants/needs for toys for one child at Christmas time.

St. Luke's "Adopt a Family Grocery Ministry" is similar to an angel tree, except it will be for food not toys: it will be a "grocery basket ministry" for targeted individual families in need. St. Francis House has given St. Luke's the names of six (6) families.  The exact name of the family will not be known, but the basic information for the family is known.

Beginning on August 26 at our MINISTRY FAIR, St. Luke's parishioners will have an opportunity to choose a family. You can choose to help a family in any number of ways: Individual parishioners or an individual family can sign up to adopt a specific family, or groups of parishioners can collaborate to adopt one family, or established organized groups (e.g., Brotherhood of St. Andrew, DOK, Choir, etc.) can choose a family. When you choose your family, you, or your group, will be asked to buy groceries once a month for that family for six months.  This will be "your" family to help!

Food purchased should not require refrigeration and be non-perishable (i.e., not milk, not ice cream, etc.). You may also choose to make a donation specifically designated for this project so that St. Luke's can buy eggs, milk or meat, from time to time for these families. St. Luke's may also look for ways to help our St. Francis House families in other ways through the year, as a parish!

If you would like to volunteer to participate or have questions about this ministry, please feel free to contact Jeannie Fry at [email protected].

DAUGHTERS OF THE KING

This sentence appears in the DOK Prayer of the Order, "Pour out upon us the sevenfold gift of the Holy Spirit that we may always remember it is your work we are called upon to do, that all we think, do or say may be pleasing in your sight." St. Emma's Daughters want to use the gifts given to them to help you and serve our Lord. Do not wait to ask for help. Simply submit any prayer request on a DOK card found in the church pew rack; call the office for visitation needs (hospital or homebound); tell any Daughter of special needs; or let our President, Mary Ann Hodge, know and she can direct us in helping you. We keep your needs confidential, as desired.

"God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another... Do it with all strength and energy God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ." ~ 1 Peter 4:10, 11
